89 Buick Lesabre wont start - it is not the battery - Is it the starter of a bad chip in the key. Is there a way to tell?

What does light up mean-no dash lights

You have a bad starter solenoid

Engine turns over & you have a no start condition?

If your off to a shop anyway-well!!

Charge battery with charger and turn on headlights and try to start.If battery bad light will dim and it will go dead and not start.

could be a problem starter relay or starter solenoid
if the battery lead goes straight to the starter , pull the starter and have it bench tested

SOUND LIKE IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER BROKEN IF YOU CANT TURN KEY.OR YOU HAVE THE WRONG KEY IN THE IGNITION SWITCH.

Lisa, how long was the key in the one position? For the heck of it, put the car in neutral, and try to start it. It's possible the neutral safety switch is bad, which could cause the problem. It should start in neutral if that's the problem. Let me know if this works, if not, I'll help further.

may have bad horn relay, for the no start check key chip and ignition switch could have bad chip contacts or just bad switch. hope this helps.

Check the starter and wiring coming to it.
Try to move them a litle to see if they are tight enough. Starter location you can find for free at
Autozone website.

98 buick lesabre wont crank with key. When I cross the starter it runs great for 10 seconds and dies.

As far as bypassing the securtiy chip, we can't tell you that one as it would assist any user on here to steal your car (or others).
When you turn the key to attempt to start it do the dash lights dim or even go out ?
