I have a 1997 land rover discovery 1. After about fifteen miles, the oil light comes on. What does this indicate and how do i troubleshoot the problem?

Hi Tom,
You are checking the oil level regulary -- correct?
What type of oil are you using?
Do you remember what the coolant temperature gauge was reading when the oil light came on?---------
Charlie
Tom,
Here are three thoughts:
Perhaps there was enough sludge in the engine that the oil filter is restricted/clogged again already. That would imply another oil change.
The oil pump may be wearing out and may need replacing
The engine is wearing out -- too much clearance around rings, bearings, etc.
I think before I investigated the last two items, I'd change the oil again. I would use high mileage oil as the last time -- I would not use detergents.

Here's a good place to get the recommended parts for a tune up.
Click on "Tune Up Parts" on the left just under the top of the page. Cap, rotor, plugs, wires, etc. are all right there.

Well do not no if you keep up on your oil change but lack of oil change and if you are not use recommended oil cheap oil can slug the pic up tube and couse all type of isuses but if you can get oil pressure gauge and test it the psi buy puling out this sending unit and butting gauge there to see if you have bad sending unit hope this helps

well i would use ngk plugs platumin or better and i would use karlyn wires or bosch hope this help redoil
well i will get back with you
well here we go here is the most common thing that happens clogged pick up tube pick up screen or loose bolt on tub and this tub connect to oil pump so in the oil pan area hope this helps

I had a very similar things happen on my \'97 Discovery (20 min after buying it! Still, I paid $800, what\'da want?)
The problem was just a lot of sludge in the crank case. Once you got it up to high RPMs the oil pickup would suck the sludge into the screen and clog. That\'s when I\'d see the OIL LIGHT.
Dropped the oil pan, cleaned it out, and it\'s running pretty well since, been about 5k miles or so.

Hi charlie, Thanks for the response. It has 154,000 miles on it and is way overdue for an oil change. I was curious if that may be the problem. The dipstick does show it to be at the proper level.
Tom
Charlie,
Thank you very much, you were right on it with the oil change suggestion. I changed the oil a week ago and the light has not come back on.
Can you make a recommendation for spark plugs and wires for this vehicle? I see a wide variance in prices. Also, Is there a distributer cap and rotor on these?
Charlie,
I changed the oil and drove the vehicle a couple of times a short distance and all was good. I drove it last weekend about 15 miles on the xway and the oil light came on again and the engine was definitely getting hot. I shut it off and went back to retrieve it a few hours later and all was good once again. Any ideas? I'm reasonably sure that the sender is working okay and that I am indeed losing oil pressure, i just don't know what to try next.
Thanks !
The temp gauge was reading normal. I went to a Valvoline oil change center and had them put the oil for high mileage vehicles in it. The level is full. When the oil light came on the engine became noisy and started to miss so I immediately pulled over and turned it off.
It turned out that the oil pan had to be dropped and cleaned out as gunk had built up and clogged the lift tube.
Hi Tom, After you get oil and filter changed, could you let me know if that turns off the oil light. If not, there may be other stuff we can check. Charlie
This indicates low oil pressure -- oil pressure typically drops after the oil gets hot. Oil pressure also drops as an engine gets more miles on it -- How many miles on the vehicle? First, check the oil level on the dipstick and add as appropriate. Next if it hasn't had an oil & filter change recently, that should be done. The vehicle should not be driven until this condition is resolved. Driving with oil light on could severely damage engine. Please, let me know what you find. Charlie
