Starter would not stop after engine turned on. Turned key off and starter kept going. Finally had to turn key on, let engine start, then place the transmission into drive. This stopped the starter from turning. However, the starter started to smoke and burned up. What happened

Subaru troubleshooting

Ignition switch is a good place to start, you may want to check the starter itself (PIA to pull and test because of its location), or you can always take it to autozone and have them run an electrical diagnostic (most of them do it for free and it takes 2 minutes), if that checks out, you can be assured it's either the ignition or wiring. Keep us up to date, and good luck.

This has only happened once but it seems serious. After the engine started the starter kept turning and did not stop for several minutes after the engine was turned off and the key removed from the...

It can be serious because it will ruin the teeth on the flywheel. The "bendix drive" in your starter is going bad. This is the part that engages and disengages the starter. While it is not overly expensive the starter has to come off and apart to fix it. Easier to change the whole starter. Hope this helps.

How do I change the starter on a 99 avalon

Could be your starter, sounds like your starter soloinoid(pulls starter gear into flywheel) might be defective. First it will not pull gear in, then if it sticks in your car could keep starting even if the key was turned off .
without looking at the car I could'nt say how hard it would be to change. It has been my observation that newer cars are much more difficult to change

My 1994 pontiac grand prix was running fine , i stopped at home and when i went to leave the car started but the stalled out!! I then tried to start it again and it barely turns over but will not start!

Not an expert by any means, but I had a similar problem.
Everything was fine until one morning (it was a bit chilly out in my defense) I used my remote starter to warm up the car before leaving.
I forgot I had used the remote and hit the brake to shift into drive. Engine stopped (obviously with no keys in it!). I thought I could just put the keys in and go, but ignition would not catch.
I've actually made that mistake a few times before, but that day, for the first time ever, it prevented the engine from starting for a good 2 hrs.
Really was no solution. I just let it sit and kept trying every 30m or so with both the key and remote starter. The remote starter finally got it going again and this time I followed the instructions (put key in and turned to "On" position).
Since then, it has started up as usual.

Starter keeps turning even when key is turned off

Curious, do you have an autostart installed? I had that happen that the Autostart shorted and just kept telling my starter to continue cranking

89 cougar cranks when key is off

There are 2 connections on the solinoid the main positive feed.(thick wire from battery)which will sometimes have other wires connected with it and a thinner wire(approx. 3mm thick) with a push on lug from the ignition relay.Check that none of those wires are in the wrong place.it will cause what you are describing

1995 Cavalier Z24 Car Wont Start

You either have a bad solenoid on your starter OR a bad ignition switch as these are the only two things that can cause the symptom you describe... I lean to the solenoid first, RARELY does an ignition switch sieze up in the start position but it is a possibility. Several national chain parts stores can test the starter for you (GM starters have the starter solenoid mounted directly to the starter and you need to remove the starter to get to it, so you would take the whole unit in to test it... REMEMBER to disconnect the battery first!)

Seems like a starter issue. Not every time but most of the time when I try to start the car it just clicks...turn it over enough and it will start. It is a 1997 model. Great car and want to keep running...

Sounds like the starter is probably missin some teeth needs to be replaced... Also go to auto zone or whatever is near you and have them test your battery
