Hello, I've just recently bought a Peugeot 206 (2001). Unfortunately, the air conditioning is acting up. It is very temperamental and can be on one minute and off the next. This is extremely annoying, as it demonstrated that the air conditioning can work, just not reliably. Does anyone know what this could be caused by?

IT COULD BE THAT THE RADIATOR FAN IS NOT WORKING CAUSING THE HIGH PRESURE SAFETY SWITCH TO ACTIVATE ALSO CHECK FOR DEBRIES BETWEEN THE RADIATOR AND CONDENSOR

When an vehicle's air conditioning system has not been used for several months, the seals within the system start getting dry. I've never worked on a Peugeot 206 or any other peugeot before, that's why I had no idea where the low pressure ac port was. The high pressure ac port is the easiest to locate, because it is in the engine compartment, facing the car from the front, on left side of the radiator. The low pressure ac port is in the engine compartment, facing the car from the front, to the back in the center, under the windshield. The low pressure ac port and the high pressure ac port both have black dust caps. The low pressure ac port is the smaller of the two.

The screech noise is most often a slipping engine drive belt so you might want to check the belt condition and for tightness there.
Unfortunately you have one of the most temperamental brands of cars on the planet there, so you may have to be patient with it at times.
You will best be served by plugging in a diagnostic computer and reading any engine fault codes. Check the condition of the air filter, spark plugs, spark plug high tension leads and fuel filter. Check the engine oil level. If this is low it can cause engine clatter or tapping noises (caused by engine lash adjusters)
Unfortunately there are so many issues with Renaults in general that I dare not guess at any particular other common faults, as there could literally be anything or everything wrong with it. I'm sorry to sound so negative.
IT SOUNDS LIKE THE THERMOSTAT IS FAULTY OR COULD BE THE FRONT FAN IS NOT WORKING IF THE FAN DOES NOT WORK THE SYSTEM OVER HEATS AND THE HIGH PRESURE SWITCH WILL CUT OUT THE SYSTEM
