Sounds like you have a vacuum leak. Air in-leakage is causing the engine to rev. It is just like opening the throttle. You may have broken off a plastic line. Listen for a high-pitch hiss. Find your leak and repair it. All your troubles will be fixed. Good Luck.
Some vehicles Red (hot lead) have an inline fuse. Also check for other fuses for the ignition. If you have an alarm system, make sure it is disarmed. That can be done by using the key to open the down some times.
If the engine is not over heating then it is doing its job. The constant cycling is based on the temp of the air traveling through the radiator and the a/c condenser not the outside temp so much. The start up high rev is just how these clutches work in ford fans. It sounds like it is operating correctly.
Honestly I wish I could offer you more info, if it revs now that eliminates the convertor, only I can figure is when you got it to rev you were "blowing the soot out" LOL I hope I have helped you some if so please rate me accordingly.
