2001 jeep liberty is stuck in part time 4wd

My automatic 2001 jeep liberty is stuck in part full time 4wd. I tried shifting between drive and reverse, driving while trying to shift from 4wd to 2wd, shifting while in neutral, and a few other things. Also, it doesn't seem to be going into full time 4wd. The light for part time 4wd stays on and nothing come on for full time.

No warning, no code, no go! ??????

what means roll?
what means no go.? dead engine or dead transmission.

if the 4wd gear shift (5 pos?) is in NEutral
the engine needs to be shut off or cannot shift out of N to 2H or 4wd. or it grinds 4wd box gears.
key off shift to 2H see if car now drives ok.

if need 4wd say so, and say if on ICE or pavement or?
or if car has 5 Position shifter that means
The Selec-Trac transfer case provides 5 mode positions. BINGO
Selec-Trac is true full time 4wd, near AWD quality.
the dash even shows the lamp FULL TIME or part time.
nice.

I can not understand your post
please tell all things the car does good and bad
not just bad. and tell what roll mean to you.

2005 Jeep Liberty stuck in Part time- shifted into 4wd PT and cannot shift out. the 4wd shifter is moving freely, but mot moving back to 2wd

Try slowly moving the vehicle in reverse and trying to shift back to 2 wd.....do not force.....shift fork damage could occur.....Try slowly moving the vehicle forward as well....Move the shifter firmly but don't force it.......Make sure the hub locks are in the free position too...........

I have a 2005 jeep liberty. none of the 4wd lights on the dash light up when selecting the different 4wd modes, stopped working today. can anyone please help me with this

usa? not diesel?
why are you in 4wd? snow, ice, off road, do tell.
not sure what lamps are dead, no photo by you.
are you talking parking lamps dead in dash? called illumination
or the mode lamps. ????
where on the dash, the main cluster? where? TRY TO BE EXACT.
do you mean shift console lamps, ????? those are on the dimmer feed.
the best answer is get car serviced
or scan it, see if there are errors. to the 4wd system etc.

we cant do grinds here, we deaf and blind and....
find a shop , that can find LOCATIONS. of noise
only That works, ever.
grinding in all modes of use, parked, neutral. driving, hills, gears.
??????????
do you have any warning lamps glowing ,driving?
the lamps if the 4wd lamps are dead.
tell me you are not using 4Low mode on pavement, first.
most times fuse are first, 2007 this changes but 2005
there are 2 fuse boxes, cab and eng bay.

ON PAGE 166 in the oper guide
lamp 6 dead, 4low?
lamp 19 FULL TIME , dead or stuck on??????
or the switch bank dead?
command trac or select trac 4wd.? NV241 or NV242?
2 options day 1.

here is my guess,
you are using 4wd incorrectly
do tell what tires are sitting on.
the me it car is command or select trac opted
and all lever selections you tried.
EACH 4wd mode has rules.
rule one stay out of 4-low. unless off road

the opr guide is here if lost.
see the word secret , here.

http://jeepdied.com/books.html

command trac, 4w is not for driving on ice free pavemenet
Comman trac is part time 4wd, (the word part meas, ice or dirt)
select trac, is full time, (never in 2w low) 4H works on pavement even dry. page 240 in your op guide.
The rules on the 2 boxes are totally different.

My 2005 Jeep Liberty is stuck in 4WD Low. I removed the shift cable and that is fine. I know it is the transfer case.

4wdlow is only for off road
stop doing that on pavement.
why not read the manual, RTM.
it tells you that same thing
and why post so many times.

also you failed to say
is it
Command trac
or Select trac
why make helpers guess key facts, like that?>????????

I have a 93 jeep Cherokee, it will move in 4wh and in 4wl but will not go back into 2wd?

Hello guy
try posting what 4wd system you have,? first.
command trac or select track, (the latter is full time)
part time or the full time system,
we cant guess it....
read the operators guide first, if a part time system only
as i suspect, stop driving on dry pavement.
it's only for ice, or dirt. part time. part time is not a full time system.
Command-Trac
shifting to 4wd on dry (means no ice) pavement causes, drive line wind up! and the gears to lockup. (see steering get tight in turns?> and is dangerous to drive it like this , you, me and the box)
posted here 100s of times.

the non grand Cherokee. early

had these choices
  • 1987-2001: New Process NP231 Command-Trac, part-time only, 2.72:1 ratio with low range
NP231 has the following settings: 2HI, 4HI, N, 4LO
  • 1987-2001: New Process NP242 Selec-Trac, full-time or part-time, 2.72:1 ratio with low range
NP242 has the following settings: 2HI, 4 full-time, 4 part-time, N, 4LO

as you can see you need to first know, what NP box you have or
photo your shift lever for 4wd, an post it and we tell you.

more facts, on select trac. (totally unlike command trac)
Selec-Trac locking hub is used on 4WD Cherokee. Selec-Trac
utilizes a non-disconnect front axle. Engagement of 2WD or 4WD is
accomplished at transfer case by means of mechanical shift linkage.
System allows full or part time 4WD. Selec-Trac can be shifted into
2WD or 4WD modes from inside the vehicle at any speed.
unquote
next from the service manual,
4WD TO 2WD
1) Place mode select switch in 2WD position. Transfer case
should shift to 2WD and not allow shifting into 4WD or LO range. Axle
should shift after transfer case shifts.
2) To determine if front axle has completed a shift out of
4WD into 2WD, position mode select switch back to 4WD position while
operating vehicle at slow speed. If vehicle shifts into 2WD, axle will
ratchet. If shift is not completed, transfer case will shift into 4WD
and hissing sound will come from mode select switch.
end quote.

if unsure read the FSM book its free.
shows you both systems and how to diagnose it.

in the box, click Cherokee,,then click 1993, and behold.
the real deal.

Sounds as if your 4x4 actuator failed to get all the way out of 4 wheel drive. Try shifting in and out of 4WD, backing up some, etc. You may have to replace the actuator, or some part of that system. Could be time for dealer diagnosis.

2005 Jeep Liberty stuck in Part Time 4wd

I questioned the dealer about my 2005 because mine was disengaging what I thought to be rough compared to what I was used to. They told me that I should shift the vehicle into Neutral before shifting the selector. I have also found that shifting between Reverse and Drive a couple of times while stopped has helped as well. By doing these couple of things, I have had no trouble since. I hope this helps as it might at least be something to try.
