Starter problems with my starter on a bmw x5. replaced starter and now all I hear is a whine from the starter, but vehicle won't turnover. what could be the problem.

sounds like the bendex in the starter is not kicking in take it to a local auto electrician and get him to check it out

Quite simply, you won't be able to start the car. All the starter does is turn the engine over until the cylinders fire. If the starter goes, you'd have to either jump start the car (if it's a manual transmission) or get a new starter.

The 1st thing i need to do is clarify what you mean by "won't trun over" do you mean the starter motor spins the engine and it will not fire up or that the starter doesn't trun the engine over? If the starter doesn't turn the engine over do you hear a clicking coming from the starter solenoid when this happens? If so replace the starter solenoid the heavy electrical contacts are burned.

Have you determined that the starter is getting the voltage/current at its terminals? It is unlikely that the starter seized after only a few months. If you have someone else available, have them hold the key to the start position while you hit the starter motor with a hammer. If the starter begins cranking, your problem is likely sticking brushes in the starter motor. If that's the case, remove the starter motor and disassemble to address the problem or get another starter motor.

My BMW 520i starts up when cold but when it's warmed up and I turn engine off it won't start it's a 1997 straight six tiptronic whats causing this?

If the engine cranks but fails to fire, the car may be flooding due to a failed temperature sensor. There are several, but the most likely problem would be the water temperature sensor.
If the engine fails to crank when hot, the starter motor is failing and will need to be replaced.

If it fires only occasionally, my first suspect would be the crank position sensor (aka pulse generator). Should be on the front of the engine mounted very near the toothed wheel on the crankshaft,
You should check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail while you are cranking to see if it is a fuel delivery problem.

IF the solenoid which activates the starter is not working, you would not be able to get the car to start with jumper cables (bump ?)
So the problem could still be starter related.
There are a lot of questions on FixYa about 'theft/immobilisers' and not a lot of answers.
I hope yours is starter related.

THis could be a bad fuel pump relay or it could be the same problem I had which.The previous owner of my car had a immobilizer installed.The guys (or should I rather say IDIOTS) who installed it were to lazy to solder the wires where they worked.They justed twisted the wires together and taped it.Eventualy these wires went bad and THe fuel pump would not get power.But your problem should be more than likely just a bad fuse or relay.

I am having the same problem with my 1991 Euro Spec. Where do you find the relays for the pump. I know there are some in the front but we tried those and it did not work. Are there others in another location or do you think there is something else wrong?
