2000 camry 4 cylinder blown head gasket (daughter drove car without water/coolant until motor stopped) , missing #1 cylinder. Had new valve job done #1 cyl. still missing heavy smoke.
Got a feeling rings are damaged.
I have been unemployed for some time and can't afford a full rebuild of short block.
could I just replace rings and bearings for the pistons and rods?
Yes, you can, but not exactly recommended. If you are going to go that deep into it, then might as well do everything else. However, being unemployed tends to have a negative impact on the wallet....
I suspect it is more than just rings. I think that the walls have been scored badly as well. You may be able to use a borescope to take a peak into the cylinder through spark plug hole. Move the piston to bottom of stroke, and see what you can see. If scarred, much work will be needed. If hatches look alright, then you might be able to get away with just rings.
What kind of compression are you getting on #1 vs #2? This also might be a blown headgasket into an oil passage, or the head (perhaps block?) is ever so slightly warped in this area.

Before attempting any further repairs I would suggest having the block checked for cracks from overheating. Foreign blocks are light but also fragile and crack easily when overheated. You may be able to replace those parts but it depends on how long and severe the car was overheated. Expansion/contraction damage may have already taken place which would require cylinder honing for the new rings.

No don't do that! This is an old car and just because your low on money doesn't mean to be low on brain power. The car can be replaced for how much? the engine can be replaced for how much? The repaired overheated motor fails soon after repairs that cost then change the engine anyway is how much? Go Figure. Don't fix the blown motor! I'm sorry to here you even whent this far. Trade it buy somehting eles Buy a complete wreak and change the motor or get a junkyard motor Some junkyards will even put em in! They take em out you know.
