I have a 1998 mitsubishi eclipse rs. it has a 2.0L DOHC engine. I have a cool air intake, KandN air filter, and an HP racing muffler, it has 169,000 miles on it. It is a cool car but i have some problems with it. 1. its very slow on take off....i can floor the gas and it doesnt pull hard at all like it should. The previous owner had a turbo kit on it but he took it off so idk if that means anything. Even flooring the gas at 60mph it should pull a little harder than it does....idk whats going on with that though. 2. when i let the car idle it idles rough....it misses alot and sometimes sputters. however when i give it gas it completely stops missing. 3. everytime i go over a bump or something my back left tire will knock. I was told it probably had a broken strut. i purchased a new one and had it installed and it stopped. now after about 1 week its knocking again. and so is the right side. and now when i let the car even idle i hear alot of rattling in the back. not knocking but rattling.
The rattling can be the exaust pipes hitting the car as the engine shakes. A vacume leak is a possible problem as the car has been worked on alot as the turbo is gone and the system was made to have one I hope you did'nt give much for this problem child as they go wackey and stay that way pretty easy. The check engine light is most likly on when running or it doesn'tr work one. Engine control codes need pulled and if mixture controll cdes are in the list the map senser hose needs checked the timing both ingtion and cam . The control codes could tip you off that the map senser isn't getting vacume and maybe applying an outside vacume sorce to the senser can clue you in to the other problems. ( make the computer think there is good vacume so it'll run smoth enough for you to find the leaks ) Ordinary compression cheak may find low cylinders as burnt valve and wore out engine are posible. These cars when HOTRODED can't last long and the tuner boys pull their money out after they blow em and sell the car as it's done as far as money goes.
Here are the most common causes of idle surge, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake
