1997 Cadillac Deville Overheating

I replaced thermostat then replaced waterpump then put a new radiator and now temp gets hotter than ever 262,,,,,,,and gets hot pretty quick,,,,,,,,within 5 miles....HELP!!!!!

  • joe_escalona Aug 29, 2009

Thanks roniecon for the reply. well yeah the fans work. engine doesn't make any bad sounds when driving,,,,would it if headgasket was blown? coolant gets hot and comes out of overflow hose so i top if off everytime i drive,,(i only go to and from work 9mi. one way) but since i replaced radiator i can't even drive that far. i had to leave it about 2mi. away from my house,,just went and got it had to put about a gallon of water in it to fill but temp rose to 212 and went back down to 203 when i pulled in my driveway. i know i shouldn't use water but i would be using way too much coolant

Have you seen if the cooling fans are working? If they are not working ,check fuses and cooling fan relays. If all that checks out fine then, replace the coolant sensor. Also if you had the coolant system emptied,or close. You will need to bleed the air out of the cooling system.not real hard to do,if you like,I will tell you [email protected]

Yes it can be the head gasket, one way to tell,is make sure the engine is cold, like in the morning.Take the rad.cap off,add water until full.Turn over the engine and let run, while looking at the opening(where the cap goes). Is the water coming out like really fast, maybe as much as a fountain? If so,then it is a head,or head gasket. If you would like to bleed system of air I can tell you how.If there is air in the cooling system,it will run hot. With it cold,or cool, not hot or real warm, fill the reservoir with water up to 3/4 full, over the fill mark.Fill the radiator full, and replace radiator cap,and reservoir cap.Make sure the hose from the reservoir to the radiator is in good shape,no holes or crimped anywhere.start the engine with the ac off.At this point the cooling fans should not be on.There not supposed to be on unless you straight wired them. Before the fans come on by themselves,or the vehicle runs hot,and right before not to soon, cut the car off.Go in the house and get on computer for about 30 to 40 minutes, and go back out side and check the water level in the reservoir. Is it down?if so add more water and repeat process until engine runs at normal temp. The fans should come on,and go off on there own, with the ac off.Let me know the out come.

Sounds like car needs head gaskets-the combustion gets into the cooling system and causes the car to overheat ,sometimes pretty quickly.certain engines are more prone to head gaskets going bad than others. sometimes its a badly designed/engineered gasket, sometimes a low enough coolant level will cause air or steam pockets in the cooling system or an antifreeze leak/hose rupturing can cause the car to overheat bad enough to damage the head gasket or the engine itself.

Check the waterpump and thermostat. When the waterpump doesn't turn, engine heat is not transported to the radiator. When the thermostat doesn't open once warm the same happens - no engine cooling.

The radiator should be hot op top and cooler at the bottom. If it's cold allover then there's no cooling fluid transport

Engine keeps overheating

I'd start with replacing thermostat (that's the most common fault) Other possibilities; waterpump, leaky hose, radiator cap (not holding pressure), fan belt broken. I'd inspect for belt & leaks - if good replace thermostat.

Replaced waterpump, thermostat, heat sensor ,still over heats

1st check all hoses to the radiator. a hose that you can squeeze easily with little effort may be bad. Replace the 2 large hoses and the 2 hoses to the heater core. It also could be the radiator is clogged. If you remove the radiator and take it to a radiator shop they can clean it out for you for a reasonable price. If it is a plastic radiator you may have to replace it with a new one.

Overheating, removed thermostat still gets hot. waterpump? no evidence of water in oil..

Your problem could be the water pump or a clogged radiator. Get the radiator flow checked at a radiator shop to find the answer.

How to replace the thermostat on 2001cadillac deville

4.6 Northstar V8. It is located on the rear of engine (driver side) in front. It is 1n the the waterpump housing cover. Remove airbox and intake tube and bottom radiator hose. 2 bolts(believe 10mm) on thermo housing. These systems are a lil finiky about air pockets....so fill slowly and let run at idle until operating temp and let cool and chk level.....fill as needed and repeat if needed.

the waterpump can look good and still be bad
after you replace the thermostate fill the radiator and leave the cap off start the car let it get too operating temp and check for flow if you have good flow shut the car off and and put a pressure terter on the raidator this will tell of and leaks

Water coming from engine into overflow tank

Sounds like an overheating problem, best to get it checked, maybe thermostat stuck closed, pluged radiator, head gasget, cracked head.

My retired uncle has a 97 cadillac deville sts that runs well but after a short distance or time idling begins to overheat. He has replaced the water pump, thermostat and had the radiator and head gasket checked. Unfortunately he lives in a rural area and there is no local cadillac dealership for diagnostic repairs.
