Was this the original problem with the gauge? If so you have problem with a wire shorting to ground from your sending unit to the gauge. If the problem arose as a result of the sending unit replacement, the new sending unit is defective.
If you mean the engine temperature sending unit, it should be on the cylinder head and has a single wire attached to it. It looks a little like a miniature spark plug with a black insulation. To simplify your search, buy the new one and look for the same thing on the engine.
You didn't tell us what year or engine you have so I can't tell you where the sending unit is. Put your vehicle information in at www.autozone.com and look up the oil pressure sending unit. Once it displays the results, look to the right and it might have a repair guide listed and it will show you, for free, the location of the sending unit. My guess is you need a new I D ten T switch.
It could be a bad connection on the sending unit it will have a single wire and be located rear the thermostat housing you can try unpluging the wire and cleaning the connection . There is another sensor the ECT that is the engine coolant tempature sensor that has more wires to it and is not the problem that tells the computer what the temp is the sending unit tells the gauge so don't mix up witch one you are working on
If the check engine light is on it could be the temperature sending unit, which is telling the car it is still cold and therefore telling it to feed more gas to heat it up.
