Remove one of the spark plugs and check to see if it is getting spark. If it is not getting spark then you have a ignition problem.

SOURCE: locate fuel filter, and safety switch to fuel pump

The filter is located at the rear seat, you have to remove it first, then you will see a cap attach with some screws. Inside that cap you`ll find the fuel filter. Before you change the fuel filter you have to release the fuel pressure first. To do that, first find the FUEL PUMP RELAY in the main fuse box located in the engine. Once you located open the fuel door and take off the cap and leave it open. Start the engine, take off the FUEL PUMP RELAY and leave the engine stop itself, when this occurs turn off the key, the you can take off the filter and changed it

SOURCE: 2002 hyundai elantra car is cranking over but won,t start it has gas you can hear the fuel pump come on don,t know what to check next

seems like a fuel pressure issue, try replacing the fuel filter with a new one, and spray some aerostart into the air intake while cranking over.

2003 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0. Would the main relay keep a car from running?

Question edited for clarity.

Possibly, some do cover things that affect starting, the 'fuel pump relay' for instance. You need to diagnose, not just replace as a guess. Check for codes. A prograde scan tool will diagnose all modules and relays.

Car cranks ok but won't start.

code p 0440 refers to evaporative emission (EVAP) m system--malfunction===causes ---hose connections ---intake leak---EVAP canister purge valve
at this point I would be considering the purge valve as the problem as what you may be getting is a vacuum in the tank from the valve not venting properly and that would not allow the pump to function and eventually would starve the injectors

Hyundai elantra 2003 hard to start but if you turn the key on 5 or 6 times will almost start straight away do you think it is a fuel pump or perhaps something else....

Most likely the pump, If you have no problems after it starts, then it could be the check valve on the pump sending unit or the fuel pressure regulator. Both of these can cause your problem. You have to do a fuel pressure check. this will let you know what is bad. If it is the check valve , I would let it go till the pump went out. You can not fix or buy one of these seperate from the sending unit. Costly for just the valve.

2000 elantra po455 code evap emission control system leak detected (gross leak) Any suggestions ?

Large leak?... Fuel Cap not tight or the wrong one is installed. Also, the charcoal canister close valve may be stuck 'open' AND/OR the purge control solenoid valve may be stuck 'closed.'
