When I turn the key the car turns over, but there is no spark on the spark plugs. So I replaced the coil and distributor cap and rotor. But after doing that, the car still got no spark. So I checked the rotor to see if it spins when i turn the key and it doesnt, so i took the distributor out and checked to see if the gear moved freely from the rotor and it didn't. any ideas what is keeping the rotor from turning?
Probably a broken timing belt. $500 repair. Connects camshaft to crankshaft and distributor runs off camshaft.

Most likely a timing belt. Way to check this is to remove the valve cover, and see if the valves move when the motor turns over. Does the motor seem like it's turning over easier / faster? THen the valves are NOT moving, and the belt is broken. COuld be a broken distributor shaft, too, if you grab the gear, and twist, the rotor should turn, if it doesn't, then there's a problem internal to the distributor shaft. It's one of those two issues.
If I understand right, the gear on the distributor should not spin on the shaft, the whole shaft should spin with the gear. I think snorkelbobby is correct unless it is a timing chain (more or less the same thing). The distributor may have to be put back in the exact spot it cam out, with the rotor in the same spot. If you take it to a garage, they can put it back in for you. If you do the work, the timing may have to be right, before it will run right.
