2005 Nissan Xterra Logo
Anonymous Posted on Aug 26, 2009

All of the brake lights are out on my 2005 xterra. The tail lights still work, the reverse lights work, bulbs are good. I checked the brake light switch on the pedal and it is good, all fuses are good and plugs are all connected. I am not sure what the problem could be now. The auto parts store said that my vehicle doesn't have a brake relay and I cannot see that it has one so I am at a loss. Please help!

The brake light circuit is fairly basic:- 12V supply, stop sw, (optional relay), then stoplamps to ground.

Check the ground connection is intact at the stoplamp bulb socket.

Brake lights

Have you checked for a burned out fuse? Tail lights also (typically) have two filaments. One for parking lights and another for when the brake switch near/on the brake pedal is in the on position. This switch is another possible source of your lack of illumination. Reverse lights should/might be on a different bulb. If you have already verified that the bulbs and fuses are good, try changing/adjusting the physical switch at the brake pedal.

2005 Dodge Durango, no brake lights...reverse lights come on when in reverse..the fuses were checked and they are all good, bulbs good and brake light or stop light switch has been replaced...still no...

The brake lights and reverse lights are on different circuits with different triggers. Check any trailer connections you have connected or spliced in that could be leading to a short. Double check the light control switch. If you have no tail lights when the lights are on then the problem is most likely the light control switch.

2005 Corolla LE brake lights not working

to ss1957, i have exactly the same problem as yours. At first i thought the bulbs of both side are okay because the filaments (there's two on each) are intact. It turned out that they're not. The brake lights came back as soon as I replaced the bulbs.

1991 volvo tail lights

Could you take out a bulb and with a testlight/probe check that you do in fact have power to that circuit .Also check that they are the correct bulb for that application I have seen people put indicator bulbs in where therse supposed to be a double filament bulb.Does the base of the bulbs lead contacts line up with the two steel terminals inside the plug?

Break light problem

Do you know if the brake light bulbs are working? (are the bulbs good?). (the bulbs have two parts, one for brake lights the other for running lights)
If the third brake light bulb is working the brake lights should be with good light bulbs.
