Hi, check fuses first but you will probably find that it is in fact the brake light switch itself that is at fault.
Now its a bit difficult to find but if you got on your knees and look close at the brake pedal if you follow the brake pedal to where it goes through the bulk head of the car into the engine bay you should see two wires going to a switch that is attatched to the top of the brake pedal.
Some of these switches are adjustable so unplug the wire connector off the switch then remove the switch should be a clip holding it in if its adjustable just slide the brake switch down the clip a couple of notches if its not adjustable then it will need replacing.

Make sure you check all fuses before you think about the brake switch as it will be a waste of time messing with the brake switch if it is a fuse that has gone.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok.

I have a 2000 Nissan Frontier. My brake lights do not go off unless I remove the fuse. Would a defective fuse do this? Or, what could be the problem?

Would appreciate your assistance.

SOURCE: 1994 CHEVY K1500 BRAKE LIGHTS DON'T WORK TOP CAB LIGHT WORKS

I figured out my problem!
From the VERY BEGINING... I changed my brake pedal switch with a BRAND NEW switch, and the lights still didn't work.

Well, I went back down there with a live wire and touched the contacts..and guess what.. the brake lights lit up!

I got a faulty NEW brake pedal switch!! I went a year with this problem, so learn from my issue, test even your new parts if it doesn't fix the problem to completely rule it out!

I hope you guys figure out what's going on with your issue.

SOURCE: 2003 Impala Brake lights dont work

The brake lights are routed through the signal light switch.
Looks like that will be the next switch to replace and the problem.

My driver side brake light went out but the tale light still works bulb is new

Hi Jimmy.

Most every circuit in a car goes through a fuse. if you look in your owners manual for the particular vehicle you drive, you should find a listing for a fuse for brake light or brake lights. The tail light being OK should not have anything to do with the brake light. They'll be different bulbs, or, at worst, different filaments in the same bulb, and on different fuses. The brake and tail lights are distinct because otherwise, if you had your tail lights on at night, no one could tell you were pressing your brakes.

If you were meaning that the bulb for the brake light in the tail cluster is good, that also will point to a blown fuse. Check there first.

Good Luck

My additional brake light is not working i have tested the brake unit and that works is there a seperate fuse for this or is it all on one fuse for all the brake lights

The third or High Mounted Brake Light runs straight off the brake light switch on the brake pedal arm. You say you tested the "brake unit"? I assume you mean the third brake light assembly, and if you get power there when someone steps on the brake pedal, then the bulbs are bad.

The power flow for the brake lights goes like this: Fuse ->Brake switch -> Turn signal switch -> Rear lights. The only difference is, if you have a 3rd brake light in your rear window, that gets its power directly from the brake switch. It does not go thru the signal switch first. So, if you are having a brake light problem, and your fuses are good, check the 3rd light in the rear window, if it lights up (assuming the bulbs are good, no one ever changes them), then the problem is most likely in the turn signal switch, hope this helps!

Brake lights don't work. Replaced bulbs, checked

Yes, you need to of course check the voltage coming into and going out of the brake light switch, if 12 Volts are there going out and coming in while pressing on the brake pedal, your brake lights aren't getting a good ground or there is a break in the circuit between that switch & the lights.

On occasion the tail lights will work with a weak ground circuit where the Brake lights won't. Best way to determine this is to just hook up the 12 volt tester to the Brake light hot wire & there at the bulb ground, then in an area away from the bulb that has a good possibility of contact/ground.

Really that's it, if the 12Volts is getting to the bulb but it isn't lighting, if you aren't getting the voltage there and the brake switch is hot on both sides when pressed, the break in voltage will have to be traced from that switch to the tail light to find the problem.

good luck.

Brake lights will not come on. It is not the bulb. The tail lights work.

The tail lights working would not necessarily mean that the brake light bulbs are good. If they are the type that have a double filament (ie: one filament for the tail light and another filament for the brake light ) the brake light filament could be bad and the tail lights still would work. If they are either single filament type bulbs or double filament type, I would check the bulb, fuses, and contact switch on the brake pedal.

Brake light will not work

check to make sure that you used the exact bulb part number that came out. each bulb has a different resistance.

Break light problem

Do you know if the brake light bulbs are working? (are the bulbs good?). (the bulbs have two parts, one for brake lights the other for running lights)
If the third brake light bulb is working the brake lights should be with good light bulbs.
