Make sure your Dakota actually has a leak detection pump (LDP). Midway through the 2004 production year, they changed to a Natural Vacuum Leak Detection (NVLD) system. If your PCM (engine computer) has three large connectors, you have the LDP. If it has four large connectors, you have the NVLD.
In 2003, the LDP was located behind and below the battery, under the electrical box with all the fuses and relays. With the NVLD system, the NVLD pump is located on top of the fuel tank, attached to the evaporative emissions canister, accessible by removing the left rear wheel and plastic inner fender liner.

SOURCE: Evaporative emission system - small leak/no BB flow condition

Although I recommend you buy a Haynes service manual for your Dodge, I think you will find the canister attached to the firewall or one of the fender wells. Most of them look a lot like an overgrown spam can and it will have two connections on it.

SOURCE: P0442 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak

The best way to find these leaks in these systems now adays, is to take it somewhere that does smoke tests. What they do is inject smoke into the system and if there is any little leak the smoke will come out of it pin pointing the leak. There might be a pin hole in one of the vaccum lines, or the plastic casing on top of the evaporative purge valve could be cracked. The smoke test will find it.

Check engine light came on, hooked up engine light urency indicator. came up code p0442 evaporative emission system leak detected (small leak) no problem with starting or driving

This simply indicates that there is a small leak from the water hoses or the car radiator.

Please put the car in park while running and close to a wall to simulate the engine and watch out for the leakage.

Good luck dear.

P0442:

if i had to guess I would say that your gas cap is not on tight enough or that is is bad. chrysler has had a lot of bad gas caps that cause EVAP service engine lights.
