First of all let's explain how the spark gets to the plugs. There is a crankshaft position sensor and a cam sensor. They are what determines when to fire the coils and injectors. The crank sensor is located on the passenger side on top of the bellhousing, the cam sensor is the pickup plate in the distributor. As the engin turns the send refernece pulses to the computer which grounds and ungrounds the ignition coil causing it to discharge and send voltager from the secondary coil wire to the center tower in the distributor cap. The rotor button recieves the voltage and distributes it to the 6 towers (1 for each cylinder) If you say you're getting spark from the rotor that tells me the primary side of the ignition system is working, and the secondary side is working into the distributor cap. I'd check for spark out of the plug wires at the plugs. Pull a wire and insert a #2 phillips screwdriver into it, hol the shaft of the screwdriver aprox 1/8"(no more) from the exaust manifold and observe the spark as someone turns over the engine. You should see a nice blue spark. If theres spark, spray a little gum cutter in the throttle body an crank it, if it fires you have a fuel problem. Install a fuel pressure gauge on the schrader valve on the fuel rail and observe it as you crank it. If theres no fuel pressure maks sure there's fuel in the tank, if so climb underneath and beat on the bottom of the tank with a rubber hammer, the pump may be going bad, sometimes you can jar them and make them run.

I am acually haveing the same issue. No fire or gas. I have changed the crank sensor on the bell housing and seems to have to affect. I am pointing my fingure at the ECM but everything else works. Is it possible part of the ECM can work and the other be broke?

If spark doesn't get beyond the rotor, pull it up and check for a black spot underneath where the shaft fits. If it is there, the thing has arced down through the body of the rotor and ruined it. Get another. The fuel pump should only run for a short time when the key is turned on. That means that it has built pressure and waiting for engine to run. Replace the fuel filter.

When it stalled you should have checked at that time to see if it was a fireing or gas problem. now you have both problems. the spark comes from the coil to the cap, inside the cap it goes from the center of the rotor to the corresponding plug wire as it rotates. remove the cap and rotate the engine, is the rotor turning? is the rotor pushed down all the way on the distributor? I have seen a new bad rotor that would short the spark to the grounded dist. turned out it was cracked when i forced it on!

Starting issue with a 1991 dodge dakota with a 318 v8. I have replaced spark plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor, and now the coil pack after I had the truck stall out and would not start 3 weeks ago. Now...

You may have a bad engine ground to the frame. Check & clean any ground wire connections. Also there may be a ballast resistor mounted on the firewall &/Or the starter that has cracked. This will only allow the truck to start in dry conditions. Make sure your red starter cable is not frayed & in good condition & clean the connections at the battery & starter. Hope this helps. Good luck!
