A VW dealer should be able to help as well as Audi dealer.

Its a difficult procedure on an Audi, due to the immobiliser.
If you can find your dash cluster security PIN (Audi will not give you this), then VCDS is capable of programming transponders.

Go to a dealer with vin and proof of ownership and have them cut you new keys --or search and see if any locksmiths have the authorization to do same

Sounds to be a security problem. Check or replace the battery in the key first. After that. It has to go on a scanner. You might want to get it to an Audi dealer for this. I have several scanners that tell me codes, but I can't do the Audi security.

best idea is to go to a battery shop and have them replace the battery
1---you will get a right replacement battery
2-- they will or should use a supply battery plugged into the electronics so that all codes and programs are not lost

KEY ON THAT CAR NOT THAT EXPENSIVE. IT HAS TO BE ORDERED BY A DEALER. THEY WILL NEED CAR VIN# . IT WILL BE THE ORIGINAL KEY CUT. YOU DON'T HAVE TO REPLACE IGNITION LOCK OR DOOR LOCK CYLINDERS. THEN IT HAS TO BE PROGRAMMED TO IMMOBILIZER ALSO BY DEALER.

remove battery from fob key and replace. also while you are in there gently clean battery contacts with a pencil eraser. start vehicle with key turn in ignition and your fob key should be GTG.

I have recently bought an audi a4 and have had to buy a replacement key as the original was lost. how do you start the car with this key?
If it does not start the car, its not correct. I dont know AUDI, but they key may have a security chip in the head. a dealer will most likely be the only option for the correct key.

Key was lost, battery disconnected for some time, had another key made by locksmith, the car starts then dies immediately, audi tells me they need to encode it again, is there any way to bypass this?
no because audi has to reprogramm these keys which are specially designed for your specific car and also this is for security purposes too.
