2000 Grand Prix won't shift from park

My Grand Prix won't shift from park unless I stick a pencil (or something similar) into the 'park release box.'  I'm wondering about how much this may cost me to fix.
Thanks!

I just got done going through this. First make sure the fuse is good wich mine was. Then pull the plastic and everyting off the center counsel. Start by removing the cubby inside take the whole box out then open the cup holder and pop the plastic trim up and do it all the way down you will need to set your emergency brake so you can put the car in neutral to remove the trim piece. if you look down at the bottom of the shifter in front of the pivot point you will see a plug that is there it has 5 wires comming out of it. if your car dont shift the green wire with white stripe is broken. if your key dont turn back the purple wire with black stripe is broken. the reason I know this is only the green wire was broke when I first opened mine up you could see it. when I went to remove the plug the other wires fell off they were all dry rotted If this happens to you you could get luckey and find one at the bone yard I did but the purple wire was broke on it thats how I know thats what controls the key. I had to fix the plug and wire it to my old harness because mine also has heated seats and preformance shift the one I got from the bone yard didnt. So if you manage to break all the wires off the plug like I did and need to wire in a new plug I have the wireing for you.looking at the back of the plug tang up top left not used top middle green top right red but there is 2 of these dosent matter wich one you use. now the bottom left purple middle red right orange and black. its not that bad to do yourself. please dont jam something in the shift lock release and leave it. They fail to tell you even with the key removed any kid can hop in and pull it out of park NOT SAFE.

Are you having troubles getting your key out of the ignition too? I had the same problem but couldn't get my key out. if you take the bottom plastic part of the steering colum off you will see what looks like a black button (like an ignitor on a gas grill) right under the ignition switch. i used a zip tie and wrapped it around the button so it is pushed in and haven't had a problem since!

It is a Shifter interlock problem. Relay Works and releases the shifter when you push on the brake and the key is in the "ON" position. Will cost around 175.00 +-. Hope this helps

Their are a couple of switches on the arm of the break pedal that activate stuff like the the break lights. They also activate a little pull solenoid that releases the shifter. Start by checking all of your fuses (most likely a blown fuse). If all of them are good then look at the switches on the break pedal. The switches will get pressed either when you push the pedal or when you release the pedal. Some switches can be adjusted. If you can't find any problems with those. Then might be a bad solenoid actuator that releases the shifter down inside the shifter. Either way you could just leave something stuck in the release box.

2007 Pontiac Grand Prix. Why does my auto door locks keep blowing a fuse when shifting out of park?

You need a good auto-electrician. Something in the shifter is causing that fuse to blow. It must have some shared power. Your doors work fine. Take the control apart and check for chafing, and check all the way down to the transmission.

2001 pontiac grand prix will not go into park fully and it gets stuck so I have to stick a key into the shift release button also trunk wont open

The shifter cable might need adjustment from the PRINDLE switch on the transmission and the trunk switch needs to be replaced.

My '97 grand prix wont shift from park. What is

Hi, you have a malfunctioning brake/park interlock. When you go to shift out of park, as you know, you have to hit the brake or the shifter won't jump out of Park into Reverse. The interlock device that in this system is probably failing.

Ignition key stuck in 2003 Grand Prix

If you have an auto trans, check to make sure the car is in park. If the shift lever is even slightly misaligned, (even though the indicator says PARK) your key won't come out.
Try spraying the tumbler with powdered graphite.
It is a common problem, and I found two possible answers. The ignition plunger in the ignition switch or the Park release solenoid located in the center console. I've heard that when the solenoid sticks it prevents your key from being released. I have not fixed mine yet, I just use the inside of a ball point pen to release the plunger by sticking it in the access hole under the ignition.
