BMW 320i 2001 is using 5L of oil every 1000miles no leaks or burning oil do you have any ideas

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

My first reaction is that it's impossible for an engine to use this much oil without smoking to high heaven and/or leaking profusely. There has to be something you're overlooking. Charlie

Try using an automotive dye in the oil the oil has to be going somewhere the dye should reveal the loose gasket or loose oil plug in which the leak may only occur at speed under pressure and not present when stopped

My Bmw High mileage 320i E90 is having oil leaks problems they have changed the oil gaskets pipes from BMW butelp

clean the engine and check where it is coming from. Is it at the front of the rear> do you smell burning oil when you switch off the engine? Clean an area under the engine compartment and see where the oil is dripping from and get back to us. Typical places for leaks are the valve cover gasket, oil filter housing bracket.

What type of engine oil for a 320i bmw e46

Use a good synthetic oil 5W30 or 5W40 or 0W40. I think you have to use the bmw long life oil rating.

I have a BMW 320i Auto. The engine tends to use oil every so often. Is this normal

If it is leaking, then it is not. Cars should not leak at all.

If it is being burned in the combustion process, some of that is normal — the older the engine, the more miles, the more so.

If it is burning a lot of oil, repairs are probably in order.

Oil can leak down the valve stems (which, if it is severe enough causes smoke on deceleration, due the the increased vacuum the intake valve stems undergo), or past the oil-scraper rings on the pistons (which, if severe enough, causes smoke an acceleration).

If this is not severe, switching to a slightly thicker oil can completely eliminate the problem. Don't go much higher than the recommended oil though, or you can introduce more serious problems.

Oil can showing bmw 320i is there a problem

Usually this just means that you are a quart low on oil. Check your oil and if it needs it add it. This should make the light turn off.

Losing oil somewhere - BMW 320i E36 (2001) Auto

U can keep driving, just make sure the oil always shows on the dipstick when u check it, if not then u can cause the engine to just freeze up from lack of lubrication.

High oil Consumption, BMW M5

Look for Castrol TWS 10W60 Motor Oil. This car should not burn so much oil, you need to use a different kind. It is recommended by BMW as well. I also heard the VANOS isnt an issue anymore, can be fixed with a different MAFF. Good luck!
