HAD NOT RUN TRUCK SEVERAL MONTHS. DOME LIGHT BRIGHT BUT WHEN TRIED TO START GOT NOTHING. HOOKED UP JUMPER CABLES FROM RUNNING CAR. TRIED AGAIN, TWO OR THREE LABORED TURN OVER THEN NOTHING. LET SET FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES. SAME. LET SET FOR ANOTHER 10 MINUTES SAME. REMOVED KEY FROM IGNITION TO CHECK CABLES AND ENGINE TRIED TO START ON ITS OWN. DID NOT STOP TILL I REMOVED JUMPER CABLES. JUMPER CABLES HOT TO TOUCH. I NEED TO REPLACE BATTERY DUE TO AGE. BUT WONDERING WHAT IS KEEPING THE IGNITION CIRUIT OPEN WITH NO KEY ENGAGED? SHOULD I REPLACE STARTER / SOLENOID? AN IGNITION RELAY?

Well first have you charged your battery back up, if so then try to by pass the ingintion switch by just connecting the two main post of the colenoid with a piece or wire, this creates a direct wire basically from your battery to your starter, if still no luck you will need a new starter located more to the drivers side close to right under the pedels on the bottom side of the truck.

the starter should be replaced. The solenoid is kikcing the pinion out but there is no contact being made to turn the starter motor. I have the exact same truck and before i changed the starter used the old starter tap trick. Tap the starter casing with a hammer and it should start turning again. hope this was helpful for you. Good luck.

most likley the positive wire has corroded off the starter. look at the small red wire more closely, if theres alot of corosion, replace the wire (and starter if needed) if you dont see much corrosion give the wire a good tug just to see if it really is hooked up well. you should disconnect the batt. before doing any of this.hope this helps and good luck

Check the starter soleniod. The soleniod may be worn internaly and sticking in the start mode. Best thing is to replace soleniod.
