I have a 83 Volvo 850 GLT with about 200K miles on it. Yesterday all the warning light came on and stayed on after ignition and the power steering went out the same time. Anyone had this problem or know what would have caused this problem? Thanks!
All the warning lights came on on our 1983 Volvo and stayed on until I drove the car about 1/4 mile. I figured that it was probably caused by a poor elelectrical connection. Several weeks later this problem occured again. I shut the engine off, connected a volt meter. Indicated DC voltage was 12.25 with the engine turned off and 11.46 with the engine on, indicating that the alternator was not working. I disconnected a red wire connected to the back of the alternator, scraped the dirt off of the quick connect terminal and reconnected the wire. When I restarted the engine the warning lights all turned off and the voltage went to 14.35 indicating that the alternator is charging. The alternator and power steering systems are both driven by belts so if both quit working at the same time, check the belts first.
