Assume you've checked the voltage on the battery? Do the headlights work? There can be enough juice left to activate the dash lights or (sometimes) activate the starter relay (clicking noise), but not enough to start the car. Voltage should be at least 12 v.
If good, try removing the battery cables and cleaning off any corrosion w/ fine sandpaper or steel wool. Try again -- if no luck, then check the main ground connections (engine and body) of the black battery cable.
If still no start, might be the starter relay. Figure out where it's located (check owners manual or online), then see if there's another non-essential relay (or spare) that you can swap in for testing purposes.
Finally, if all else fails, remove the battery and take it to an auto parts place for (free) testing. After charging, they'll test it under load. Sometimes a battery's voltage will be OK, but when a load is applied, the voltage drops too low.

Ma wish to check starter it could be bad or have loose wires on it. There may be a starter relay in the fuse box under the hood it may also be bad.

try this website to see if they have your car listed its www.autozone.com or stop by your local library to look at a Haynes auto repair manual for your car
SOURCE: 1998 bmw 740il will not start even with new a battery
If you checked all the fuses try putting the car in neutral sometimes the shifter gets misadjusted and wont start till the car is completely in park.If not check for a lose wire to the starter. If the car has an after market alarm you will have to turn it off before starting there should be a little buuton under the drivers dash or kick panel.GOOD LUCK
SOURCE: My dash lights don't work.
this got easy after a while 2 ways, i had friends who would not take the time to spend 8dollars to buy a harness connector for a new cd player and would splice everything together like takeing the red and yellow wires and connecting them all together as one. this drains ur battery unless ur cd player can completly power down by the power button not all do... but keep this in mind on GM cars the 2 wires of the same wires like purple the one with a black stripe is ground they go together stripe on stripe also there is 2 extra wires one is ORANGE and BROWN u dont need these dont even mess with them even if u have a connector block them off THESE TWO COLORS IS FOR FACTORY STEREO IF SO THESE WIRES CAN AND WILL MAKE IT SO U DONT HAVE DASH LIGHTS so always buy a connector ond dont mess with these wires block them off and dont ground them out.

THE PROBLEM IS THE DASH LIGHT DIMMER CONTROL IS EITHER TURNED OFF OR THE DIMMER IS DEFECTIVE, HAVE SEEN BOTH. THE DIMMER IS NEXT TO THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH
