Well that could be the problem but you might also want to check the fuel pressure the pump might be weak or you could have another sensor out of perimeter witch is causing to act that way

the problem maybe a problem with fuel pickup at 1/2 tank, if the line has blockage, the filter is clocked up, the leveling or device that keeps track of fuel level is defective, there issue with the floater, the part that suppose to float has or full of fuel and when it gets to 1/2 tank, the floater full of fuel and sinks like your out of gas.
i think most likely clogged fuel filter in the fuel tank if your car has this type of system.
if not the fuel filter most of the time its near intake of the injectors, underneath the drivers seat under the car.
or by the inlet and outlet of the fuel tank.
more like fuel pump damaged. gasoline keeps fuel pump cool and lubricated if fuel tank run empty fuel pump will over heat which will destroy it. never run out of gas.fuel filter will get plugged with debris from fuel tank when tank runs empty all sediment botton tank will break up stop up fuel filter.
signs of a bad fuel pressure regulator. the vehicle runs rough, the engine will not start usually in the mornings. many times engine starts but stalls shortly after starting. a bad regulator can result in fouled plugs. black soot on plugs, blake smoke from tailpipe, running rough, stalling. you could have residue in fuel tank and need to change fuel filter again. have a very good day !!
Maybe you are actually running out of fuel ,gas gauge is showing 1/4 of a tank when it is really almost empty . Would not have anything to do with the fuel filter , if it did it would happen when full also .
Ok just for starter, this vehicle may be due for a tune up, but what affects fuel economy more than a tune up are oxygen sensors(02 sensors). just in-case you don't know because you seem very knowledgeable, they are located in the exhaust system. start from the manifold and work you way down to the tail pipe, they look like spark plug with electrical wires attached to the color of wires are white, black and grey. About they fuel filter no they are not 100 dollars each, much less than that, however one is located in the gas tank and other is outside of the tank. Contact me if you need more help. Good Luck
