Question about Jaguar Cars & Trucks
Leaking or missing vacuum lines can definitely make an engine die or run poorly. In my experience, once you've unhooked an old, hard rubber line, it probably won't seal properly when you hook it up again. So I suggest changing all the lines that you can reach.
Also, there's usually a big vacuum line to the power brake booster, which can leak a LOT of air if it gets hard and doesn't seal properly. The cruise control motor, which is vacuum operated, is another place to check. Also, check the vacuum line(s) to the PCV valve and the rubber seal that it sits in -- again, a likely source of leaks.
Any idea why the previous owner disconnected some of the lines? If he was trying to solve a problem, it may still be there when you replace the lines, and had nothing to do with them.

SOURCE: Starts but will not turn over
check the wires on the coil, try switching them, i had this exact problem. the wires were on correct as of the diagram but they were actually backwards. its an easy fix if that is the problem, the coin is right on top the engine.

Does check engine light or wrench light come on? If yes, get free computer scan from Autozone or other parts store that offers free scan. Sounds like a sensor is failing

SOURCE: Jaguar XJ6 1993 not starting.
I have had a similar problem and found that the centre wire from coil to distributor cap had slipped back just far enough from inside the coil to not make a good connection..and no spark meant cranking but no spark to plugs...

Had similar problem which ended up being the Park Gear selection position. Do you get a beep noise when out of gear? What about when in park. Although my car was in Park, it needed wiggling out a little while turning the ignition to get it to crank and has been this way ever since.
Also had a Sovereign with an immobiliser that gave me the same no start problems some times, no solution other than an expert auto electrician for that.
