Somewhat depends on the make/year. Older cars/trucks had a cable from the transmission to the speedo/odo. These can wear out and/or need grease, and can squeak. Newer cars/trucks replace the cable with electronics, and aren't likely to squeak...
If you have a cable, greasing can be messy. The one time I saw this done was on a '60s car, and the mechanic removed the cable from the back of the speedo, pulled the center almost all the way out of the outer covering, and applied white grease all along the center while pushing it back in. Never squeaked again.
If you are talking about the red display in the center of the instrument cluster then let it cool off and check it again, they were bad about fading in very hot temps, if it does not come back when cooled then the cluster will need to be replaced, and I belive only the dealer can do that due to the immobilizer (programing the keys).
I think the speedo head is probably good. You need to check the speedo cable and the gear at the end of the cable housing. If the gear is cupped in the center it is worn out. Replace the gear by the color code at your local Ford dealer. The other scenario would be that the gear on the output shaft is worn also. This would require the tailshaft be removed from the tranny and the nylon gear replaced on the output shaft. Good luck.
