How to change a fuel filter for a 1986 Toyota Camry 2s-e engine

The first thing you need to do is run an engine control system fault code test. To do this follow the instructions here.

have you pulled codes or checked the fuel pressure? It could be a host of things, like a clogged air filter restricting the flow of air into the engine, a bad air meter, clogged injectors, etc. Engine codes will help you start narrowing things down.

Has the engine air filter ever been changed?

u may hav blown a fuse--fuel pressure regulator cud be the real issue-its found in engine area--u need a repair manual for test and inspec

2S-ELC, 3S-FE and 5S-FE Engines

When install, align the crankshaft pulley set key with the pulley key groove. Install the pulley. Tighten the pulley bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).

On 2S-ELC engines, turn the crankshaft pulley and align the 0 mark on the lower (No. 1) timing belt cover. Align the camshaft knock pin with the matchmarks on the oil seal retainer.

On 2S-ELC/USA engines, align the knock pin with the pin hole on the timing pulley E mark side. On 2S-ELC/Canadian engines, align the knock pin with the pin hole on the timing pulley.

On 3S-FE and 5S-FE engines, align the knock pin with the groove of the pulley, and slide the pulley onto the camshaft with the plate washer and set bolt.

Try changing the fuel filters, if they are clogged gas cannot reach the engine.

Make sure you use proper gauge oil.

is the engine cranking over?

The fuel filter on a 97 Camry is located on the firewall, on the driver side of the engine compartment, right above the transmission. This is not easy to change. Suggest that the engine to be cold when attempting this to avoid getting burns from the hot engine. Note also that when the filter is removed, fuel may still be under pressure, and it my spray for a bit. Now, here is the bad news: Toyota fuel filters are notoriously overtightend when assembled at the factory. This being said, when you remove the filter, the threads from the line running from the bottom of the filter (to the fuel tank) my strip out when you remove that line, and you could very well need to replace that line, along with the filter. If the engine is running poorly, investigate & exhaust all possibilities to correct the running condition before condemning the fuel filter. Finally, always use new copper gaskets when replacing the filter (it should come with 2 new gaskets).
