When should the timing belt be changed?

I have 75000 miles on my '99 Camry. No problems. Dealer says it's time to change the timing belt. Can I wait?

The recommended mileage is 90,000 But if it is original it may be starting to dry rot, which is when the rubber drys out. You should be ok for now:)

90,000 miles is based on the mitchell on demand which has the manufactures specs.

Simple answer. NO a timing should be changed every 50,000 mile's. It may last a while longer on a newer car but it is not recommended Your timing belt is 10 year's which is cause for concern regardless of the milage. Snapped timing belt new engine. Hope this helps. Cheers

Most timing belts are have an average life of 60000 miles. I would recommend everyone to have the timing belt changed when it is due to be. the alternative is a tow bill, sometimes internal engine damage can also result from a failed timing belt. How much money do you really want to spend?
Btw if the water pump is run from the timing belt, consider having this replaced at the same time or when it does fail you will wish you had done it with the timing belt replacement in the first place.

Does My 93 Camry have a timing chain or Belt ? when to change it?

its timing belt. This car requires the timing belt to be serviced at every 60k miles. This engine is a non-interference motor, so the engine will not get damaged internally if belt breaks. But other parts externally can become damaged. Also at the same time the timing belt is changed, replace the water pump, idler and tensioner pulleys.

If there is no problems with the performance of your vehicle i would just leave it alone. You should still get 20 to 30 thousand miles out of it yet.Dont fix what is not broken.

Belt or Chain

Yes those vehicles have timing belts instead of chains. I have yet to see a timing belt that doesnt need to be changed at some point. Maybe the tech meant you didnt need to change them now. Each manufacturer has their own mileage interval, but generally speaking, anywhere between 60,000 and 90,000 miles they are due to be replaced.

Do I change water pump when having timing belt changed

I would go to auto zone and get a diagram and the timing belt and do it yourself and the water pump (no it does not have to be changed everytime the timing belt is changed but if the car has over 60,000miles then it is best to change them both) it is not that hard especially if the car is not out of time just make sure you disconnect the negative side of the battery

2001 Toyota camry 2.2 L 4 cyl engine timming belt replacement

The 2001 Camry 2.2 has a timing belt.
Recommended change interval is 90,000 miles.
There is no good reason for putting the replacement off, as the belt may be stretched slightly when it nears the rec replace interval, and your mileage may suffer because the engine is not in proper "time".
If the belt jumps time or breaks, it will NOT damage the valves.

Tune up

At 60,000 you should have all the major things done if you haven't already:
oil change(every 3000)
air filter change(every 15,000)
coolant flush(every 30,000)
spark plugs and wires(every 30,000)
transmission fluid & filter change(every 30,000)
brakes (as needed)
PCV valve (every 20,000)

You can wait until about 75000 miles to do your timing belt.

Hope this helps
