Your computer has found an error. It may be a small one, or not. You need to have someone (A garage) put a scanner to it to read it out. They can also reset it with the scanner. But if your computer still senses an error, it will turn the light on again.

My toyota's check engine light wouldn't go off--when it was time for emissions testing I took it to a mechanic and he said it was my MAF sensor. I am sure there are many issues that could be making your engine light come on--but this may be what's going on with your car as well
