Elantra Timing Belt off by one tooth

I recently changed my timing belt and water pump on my '03 elantra. After the job, my car seems to run fine, no noticeable difference in power, no sputtering, idles smoothly etc. However, my gas mileage seems to be worse than before I changed the belt. Thought maybe I was just being paranoid, but I've checked it carefully over the last few weeks and there really does seem to be a noticeable change, about 5mpg lower than it used to be, both when I take an average over a tank of gas as well as when I set cruise control and look at the trip computer. I have checked tire pressure and other potential simple answers.

Is it possible that I got the timing off by one tooth? if the belt is off one tooth, i would think that I would notice some performance/power differences beyond just gas mileage. Anyone have any experience with how an elantra might perform with the timing belt one tooth off?

The timing system is very precise regarding fuel trims (fuel map). If the timing is, in fact, one tooth off, I'm surprised you haven't had a 'Check Engine' light with the DTC of P0016 - Crank position to Cam position Correlation and P0010 Camshaft Position-Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance(Bank 1). This condition will definitely affect fuel efficiency - no doubt about it. You can verify this by checking the ECU fuel trim data adaptives (OBDII scanner) - they should be near 100% (or zero '0.0'). You might also get a P0171 or P0172 - System too Lean or Rich.

Hyundai Elantra 1999 timing issue

It's a '99 Elantra, have you ever replaced the timing belt? It is a belt not a chaing, so it is very much should have the belt changed. After 13 years if you haven't done the belt yet now appears to be the time to change. I have an '05 and we changed it over a year now.

Good luck!!

I own a 2003 Hyundai Elantra LX and currently have just over 63,000 miles. Is this the time that I should replace my timing belt? If so, would it make more sense to have my water pump done at the same...

Yes, you are just about spot on for the timing belt. Leave the water pump - if it ain't broke don't fix it. Changing the belts does not disturb the water pump so wait until it actually starts to leak, and that could be in years to come.

Whats a difference between timing belt and drive belt , for my 2004 Elantra Hyundai cernter is asking to change the drive belt and flush the Hyd oil, car has 53,000 miles on it

a drive belt refers to belt driven items like alternator, power steering, water pumps and the like.

A timing belt is cogged to precicely hold the relationship between the crankshaft and the valve train. Timing belts are usually located within covers, as the loss or damage to this belt exposes engine damage and failure.

Is it necessary to change the timing belt in a 2004 Elantra VE with 65000 miles (105500 Km)? No problems with it, just mechanic says it's time.

60,000 miles is the typical recommended interval for timing belt replacement. The belt can become worn and skip a tooth or even break. In that event, the pistons can collide with the valves and cause a considerable (and expensive) amount of damage. Changing the timing belt at recommended intervals is good insurance to protect against valvetrain and piston damage due to belt failure.

Coolant leak in the back of water pump.

replace water pump; sounds like it's coming from the weep hole(that's what it's called), because it starts like tears, and then comes the floodgates. your're gonna need a w pump.

If you have to get your timing belt reset on a 2003 Hyundai Elantra how long will it take for them to reset it? Is it an all day job. Will it take a few minutes or just an hour?

the timing belt is nothing but the belt that connects the crankshaft to the camshaft. its less than a 2 hour job.

dont replace the timing belt with any thing but the OEM belt or wour ignition timings will change and can make your car not diveable.

Do I change water pump when having timing belt changed

I would go to auto zone and get a diagram and the timing belt and do it yourself and the water pump (no it does not have to be changed everytime the timing belt is changed but if the car has over 60,000miles then it is best to change them both) it is not that hard especially if the car is not out of time just make sure you disconnect the negative side of the battery

Water pump

1. Drain the coolant and disconnect the coolant outlet pipe connection hose from the coolant pump. 2. Remove the drive belt and engine coolant pump pulley. 3. Remove the timing belt covers and the timing belt idler. 4. Remove the coolant pump mounting bolts, then remove the generator brace. 5. Remove the coolant pump assembly from the cylinder block.
