You didn't say what year, but almost all hard start and soot problems with a diesel is caused by the glow plugs. Check the underhood fuse block for the glow plug fuse and if it's blown you can replace the fuse and if it blows again replace the glow plugs as well. I hope this helps. Take care.
You need to check that you are getting power to the glow plugs, when the light shows on the dash you should have 12V to the glow plugs, if you do have 12V at the glow plugs and it still is having issues starting then your glow plugs may need to be replaced. You can buy them off ebay at reasonable prices.
sounds like a glow plug problem,if it starts o.k. when warm, but not when cold, does it smoke a lot when trying to start it cold,if so i would say your glow plugs are either burned out or theres no power to them when you turn on the key,do you see the glow plug light on the dash,it may light, but that doesn,t mean the glow plugs are getting power
It may be the starter motor contacts which are worn. I have done this twice (on 2 different estima's myself. The starter will not turn or not properly. New contacts for these Denso starters are available on ebay from nipponnev for about £10 delivered and take about 1 hour to fit. No need to buy another starter. Hope this helps. Regards, Paul
