First thing you do is check fuses which are located driver side door side of the dash and 2nd fuse location is on top of battery
If fuses check ok next you turn on car allowing car to warm up and turn on the air condtioning full blast this should turn on both fans automaticly. Give time for car to warm up reach at half way mark on temperature gauge or air conditioning wont turn on fans automaticly if engine is to cold. If both fans turn on than your fans are not the problem. Next would be the cooling fan switch which is located on the radiator on the driver side lower bottom. It has 3 wires to it disconnect the switch and jump the wires that are parallel to each other and this should turn on your fans. Only if you give time for car to warm up reach at half way mark on temperature gauge. Its very important that the car is warmed up your guage should be reading half of the temperature gauge or none of theses tests which I explain will work. If the fans turn on when you jump the connectors than the problem is the cooling fan control thermal switch(costs $40)but if the fans dont turn on than I am sorry. Finally if all theses tests pass you have a real expensive problem or time consuming problem.

Take a look at your fuses on top of you battery good chance one or two of them are blown this is caused by the fans jumping from stop to full speed to many times you will need to replace the fuses and both of the fans as that they work in tandem with each other. That is the most common issue that i see the other but not as often the fan control module will fail but that usually only happens if the battery has leaked down onto the module that is just under the battery and on the bottom of the frame.
Interestingly enough I just had the same problem and the solution was exactly as was posted. The fans kicking on and off had caused one of the fuses (located on top of the batery) to over heat and litterally burn in half. I removed the old burned debris, cleaned the connection and replaced both fuses. Walahhh.
hey same here, fuse was partially burnt and the aluminium contacts had coroded . quick rub with emery cloth ( type of sandpaper for metal ) and fans working again .
Make that two. Fuse on left hand side of three fuses directly over the battery on a 2004 Jetta 1.8 Gas Turbo. I scraped the corrosion off the fuse terminal and the fuse receptacle and replaced the fuse. Fired up the engine and cooling fans and A/C compressor came on first time. Thanks for the help!!

I just replaced the Volkswagen/Audi Auxiliary Fan for $26.86 (Control Unit # 1J0 919 506 K)... FIXED THE PROBLEM!!!
Originally I had: Both fans and compressor not working, all fuses good, and all grounds good, and an extremely high 134a pressure on both the High and Low side. I bought the part on eBay, swapped it out, and instantly problem solved!
(Side note) I discovered that one fan is not working correctly (which I will address later), however the A/C is working GREAT again!
I own a 2002 jetta 1.8T
