The spare tire in a 1996 Grand Cherokee is supposed to be bolted on the inside the rear trunk area, on the drivers side, not underneath the Jeep as you think. The only thing under there taking up all the space is the gas tank. If it's not in the back, then you don't have one. The jack and tire iron are located under the rear seats.
This is a problem I have been
seeing more and more of lately. The brake light circuit goes through
the Lamp Outage Module (LOM). When the LOM senses a inoperative lamp,
the Vehicle Information Center (VIC) displays the data to the vehicle
operator.
Here is how to test the system (clic for zoom):
Check here for more details about the location of Lamp Outage Module (page 16).
the driver information center(DIC) is telling you one or more of your rear light bulbs has failed. it could be a tail light, stop light, center high mount stop light, turn signal or license plate light. have someone in the vehicle turn the lights on and hit the brakes and turn signals so you can see which one is burned out.
Check the center brake light assembly. There are 3 bulbs and if one is out it will give you the bulb out warning. This is frequently missed as if the center bulb is out it is easy to overlook.
Do yourself a favor and replace all 3 when you are there as the dissassembly/assembly is not that easy on 96-98 Grands
You can only use other Grand Cherokee rears.
Check the gear ratio on the tag of the rear. You need to replace with the same ratio.
But in your case since it's a 2x2, you can use any other ratio as long as the tire sizes are the same.
This will not affect the speedo accuracy.
