How do I change out the starter in a 2000 Toyota Camry LE 6-cylinder?
It's an intermittant problem. The car doesn't always start on the first try. When turning the key it acts like a dead battery and just clicks, or the starter will crank then die, or it will crank then have that "free spinning" sound. Sometimes when it does start the engine, the starter is still cranking a second or so after the engine has started.
Just to make sure though, I replaced the battery & cleaned the cable connections. The battery voltage is solid with a load (AC, lights, etc. on with & without the engine running). Even tried starting the car in Neutral with the same results.
So how hard is it to change out the starter in my Camry?
I'm sure it's not the starter itself that is the problem, have the stater's solenoid checked...it might be stucked. It's quite a lot of work removing the starter but you can do it if you are willing enough to learn. You just need the right idea and tools to do it. Hope this will help save you bucks!

the fuel filters are located in the engine compartment drivers side near the brake booster
SOURCE: Where is the neutral safety switch locayed at on
Where they all are on Toyotas - on the trans, mounted under the selector arm (the one that moves when you change gears.)
