Rattling Noise Hello, I have a Toyota Previa 1994. It has recently developed a rattling noise from around the catalytic converter. The noise comes every now and then when I press the gas. The vehicle runs otherwise good. My steering wheel sometimes feels stiff when I try to turn it but gradually becomes normal and easy. It happens when I first start the van and try to back up. My first mechanic suggested I flush the steering wheel oil. I did, but problem still persists. Second mechanic suggested that my steering wheel oil pump might be going bad. Thank you all for your help. M.A.

The power steering pump could be going bad. The noise coming from the catalytic converter could be something as simple as a mounting bracket coming loose, or worst case something busted internally.

Jeep 360 rattle sound at idle in park

it could be a wrist pin, and im not sure if those amc's had hydraulic lifters but sometimes with old lifters when the oil pressure is lower at an idle the lifters arnt filling up all the way so they develope a little valve lash, and when the rpms are raised the oil pressure raises and fills the lifters. you could try chasing the noise down with an automotive stethoscope.

I am hearing a rattling sound like a loose piece of metal when I accelerate

Hello, Most common cause of rattling noise is a loose heat shield on the catalytic converter. It's all right to drive in this condition but if the noise becomes too bothersome, you can either remove it or bring it to a muffler shop and see if they will spot weld it or secure it another way. Don't let them try to sell you another catalytic converter.

Thanks

It's making a rattling noise underneath by the exhaust, when i give it gas. Sometimes loses power. What can be the problem

Your rattle is coming from teh catalytic converter on your vehicle. Depending on the mileage, quality of fuel used, etc the catalytic converter can be damaged. It is best to have it replaced and at the same time have the intake system cleaned to prolong life of the new one. Average cost is 200-400 dollars for replacement.

98 Ford Explorer engine/exhaust noise

When catalytic converters go bad, the porcelain matrix inside comes loose and is noisy.
But you can just unbolt it, break up the loose chunks, pour out the pieces, and it will run better than ever.
If you don't pass the next emissions test, then replace it.

But it could just be the heat shield rattling instead.
Take the shield off first, to see if it goes away.

Rattling of catalytic converter heat shield

If it is the heat shield , any muffler shop can put a couple of welds on it. Could also be that the cat converter is destroyed inside with pieces of it ratling around. In that cast a new cat is the only answer.

04 Endeavor rattling noise

I had the same problem! I crawled underneath the car and discovered that a heat shield on the exhaust header pipe was corroded and rattling against the exhaust pipe. (Before the muffler)
I removed the portion and clamps and solved the problem. Give it a try.
