if you supplied a photo it didn`t show.

I suspect that the gear selector cable has failed
if so replace with a new one.

Find the transmission dipstick and buy a funnel, place the funnel in the tube and fill to the manufacturer specs

Yes the engine has to be out,its not a easy task to replace transmission.You will required professional tools and wrench/ratchets.
Also its very time consuming.

If it's a stander transmission you add under your truck on the side of the transmission where it reads fill, if it's automatic it's has to have and dip stick for that year truck.could be missing check the side of transmission above transmission pan toward the front for a hole where the tube goes in, it would also be leaking if gone.

there is no dipstick u have to take out sener plug out from passenger side axel at rear of trans if fluid trcels out its full

there is no dipstick for the forenza automatic transmission. it is checked like a manual transmission. You have to remove the fill plug and add some until it drizzles out. also it uses a special fluid that you can only get at the dealer.....

Is it a thump thump thump and is it effected by engine speed?

the trasmission fluid leval may be low or your cluches are slipping. check the trasmission fluid leval with the engan wormed up and the trasmition in park pull the dip stike with yellow on it and check the level alsow smell the dip stick if it smells burnt the the tran fluid need to be changed.
if it is low put tranmition fluid in it by using a long funal and put the fluid in the tranmition dip stike tube. If the leval is full and the fulid is not burnt it might be trasnmiton cluches and the tranmition needs to be rebilt.
