Best to have shop replace trans pan gasket, flush and refill about $125 roughly or locate the drain plug. Depends if you have 75k miles or higher do the maintenance and thr trans will thank you for and shift mires smoothly run cooler
From drain point.
Two ways to do it and take the tranny pan off and drain it out or you can stick a tube down your transmission fill tube and siphon it out that way
Hard way is to drop the transmission pan enough to let some drain out. very messy and hard to catch the fluid. you can go to a hardware store and buy a pump that fits on a drill. then use some tubing and you can suck some fluid out the dip stick tube and pump it into a container. otherwise, you have to take it to a shop/dealership.
Are you checking it when running or parked ---if to much was put in --can drop pan and might as well do a filter also or siphon thru trans dipstick https://www.carcarekiosk.com/video/2005_Mercury_Montego_Premier_3.0L_V6/transmission_fluid/check_fluid_level

In the glove box there should be an owners manual,if you have one,
look in the back of the book in the index, under capacities,it should tell you how many quarts you need.
SOURCE: removing front suspension so that
use an 18mm socket to remove the nut on the ball joint bolt, use a 15 mm socket (a 15mm box wrench might be more useful) to spin the bolt out the other side. use a pickle fork (not the one in your kitchen) the guy at the parts store will know what it is. Slip the fork between ball joint and knuckle (knuckle on top, ball joint on bottom. use a hammer to drive te fork in, and you may have to hit the top side of the fork to help break it loose, once loose, use a pry bar to wedge the ball joint out of the socket.

Check your owners manual.
If the van does not have a dipstick, you are supposed to use a plug in the side of the transmission.
He either added the trans fluid to the engine oil or he is checking the wrong dipstick. CHECK THE ENGINE OIL LEVEL to see that the trans fluid is not in the engine. If the engine oil is full of trans fluid, do NOT START the car and now you need to change the engine oil and also add the trans fluid to the trans. If engine opil is ok, be sure to find correct dip stick for trans fluid. They should be marked accordingly.
