Question about 1992 Volkswagen Cabriolet

1 Answer

I have to replace my alternator belt on my 92 vw cabriolet. I can't seem to release the tension on the "other" belt thats in the way. I found the tension release bolt on the bottom and I thought I'd loosened almost ever other bolt as well on the components (i think there is the power steering and water pump)

There should be two bolts one at the pivot point other at the tension point might be rusted in positing. Take a piece of wood and try to crack it loose or a rubber hammer to get it that extra force.

As for the other belts there should be a third pully just for tension for the ac and for the power steering just loosing the pivot bolt and the tension bolt and it all should come loose

JUST A DIAGRAM OF THE SERPENTINE BELT ROUTE

The diagram can be found here.
Remove the upper fan shroud and aircleaner assemblies for easy access.
To release tension on the belt turn the tensioner pulley nut clockwise and slip the belt off the alternator pulley. To refit the belt route as shown over every pulley except the alternator, once again release the tensioner and fit the belt to the alternator. See that the belt is properly seated over every pulley before restarting the engine.

I have a 92 honda accord LX. How do i remove and replace the alternator?

Unplug the battery
Loosen and move the power steering pump out of the way (don't disconnect the hoses to it)
Loosed the bolts on the alternator (should be a 14mm on the top bolt, then there will be another lower (hard to reach 12mm bolt) where it pivots. Then, on the lower front of the alternator, there will be two 10mm bolts visible for the alternator belt tension bracket, loosen the RIGHT one as that will release the tension on the belt. You may need to bang or pry to get the alternator to swing out even if you have all the bolts out. They like to lock in there.

Drive Belt

I am not too familiar with your vehicle, but if it has a serpentine belt there is a tensioner that keeps tension on the belt. Most tensioners have a area where a 1/2" ratchet or breaker-bar can be inserted to release the tension. The tensioner is nothing more than a spring loaded pulley, so look for the pulley that seems to be doing nothing.

Replace belts on a 92 nissan 240sx

loosen tensioners using a pry bar or equivalant and loosen tensioners on ac and alternator then tighten when replaceing. work on outside belt off fist and then inside belt off second. then install inside belt first and then outside belt. you will see a grooved hole where the bolt goes through the alternator to reduce tension.

the air conditioning compressor is driven by the crank and that drives tha alternator. you have to take off all the belts in order to change the alternator belt.

Alternator Replacement

You may have a self tensioner which applies belt tension with a spring.

Look for a spot to put a 1/'2"drive breaker bar on it and release the belt tension, then slide the belt off and install new belt. You may need a helper to remove the belt while you hold the tension off,

you need a 15mm wrench use the open end of the wrench and put it on the nipple on the top of the tensioner pulley assembly then push it back it will release the tension enough to slip it off the altenator
