First thing to check is fluid level and fluid condition and odor, if it smells burnt you have a problem, if fluid is low but okay otherwise then look for leaks, do a systematic check , if all looks good you may have other things wrong, some hard part failure anywhere from a torque converter to a transmission pump on down the line... try a reputable transmission shop...please rate my help.. thanks

Speedometer stopped working and transmission won't shift

Make sure all the connectors are connected to the transmission input and output shaft sensors. Also, check to see if the vehicle speed sensor is connected as well as the range switch. If all are connected, disconnect both battery cables from the battery and hold the positive cable and the negative cable to each other for about 30 seconds. Doing this drains the capacitor in the ECM and resets the system. Reconnect the cables to see if problem is still present.

CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL. SOUND LIKE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING. BEST THING TO DO IF NOT.TO CHANGE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER.IF TRANSMISSION FILTER STOPPED UP TRANSMISSION CAN PUMP ENOUGH THROUGH DIRTY FILTER TO OPERATE WHEN FLUID GETS HOT BECOMES THINNER THEN IT WILL FLOW THROUGH FILTER BEFORE TRANSMISSION WILL SHIFT RIGHT.

Cheapest scenario is to change the transmission filter. That is if it is an automatic. When you do this, most transmissions have a magnet in the transmission pan. If yours has one I would check it for excessive metal shavings or worse metal chunks.
