First you need to spray some quick start in the throttle body to see if it runs for a bit, if it does then you know it's fuel related then you would trace to see if you have fuel pressure at the rail, if pressure is ok then check spark and crank shaft sensor.
Hook up a pressure gauge to verify a fuel problem. If no fuel, then check to see if you can hear the pump running. If you cannot, then you may have a problem with the fuel system and if you do not know too much, then have it taken to an automotive shop for repairs. Otherwise check your fuses and pump relay.

I would start by looking for the valve on the fuel rail (or at the filter housing), if you disconnected the fuel pipe from the filter feed you will have a lot of air in the system (and diesels do not like air in the feul system) you will need to have someone crank the motor over while you push in on the schrader valve to release the air out of the system until you get fuel to flow steady out of that port (this may take a short period of time), then you should be able to start the vehicle... would also recommend replacing the fuel filter as well. hi, this is a long shot so dont give me negative if no joy.
on the p38 they suffer from a bad electronic selector.
now, i do not have a clue what gear box or transfer you have.
any way if you look at your transfer, beside where the prop comes out, is ther like a window wiper motor with 6 wires.
if so they get stuck, rust or dirt etc.
have you checked your fuses, alos i would add. again not sure on your model.
in the fuse box there is a blank fuse, when inserted it shifts it to neutral.
the dealers wont tell you where it is.
have you put any fuses in etc, i did this 5 year ago, a p38 was jump started, leads wrong way.
i got a call as the aa did not want to help anymore. aa had a hand full of fuses out, i stuck in were contacts were. after new ecu had no drive.
you are sure its not a gearbox fault, get back to me if not sure, i can tell you how to test this.

sounds like a ground problem. there is more than 1 ground wire on them
