Check that it isn't overloaded to the point that it is blocking the latch mechanism. Look at the hinge alignment, and make sure that nothing protrudes into the edges that can cause the door to not close. As an aside, if you can lock the compartment, try unlocking it. Spray a bit of consumer-grade lubricant (WD-40 or try some Armor-All) and exercise it a bit. Hope this helps.

What happens is the door handle linkage breaks and you cannot open the door. You can get it open with a very thin metal strip, by jimmying the latch, but it is really hard to do. I also used to drill a hole in the door to get them open, then replace the door.
