I have a 2000 navigator and it cranks and acts like it wants to start but won't. Sometimes it will start only to drive for a while and then just turn off on you and not come back on for a long time

Sounds like a possible crankshaft sensor, when they start to fail the resistance in the sensor gets too high, sometimes will manage to start but as the temperature of the engine (and in turn the sensor) increases so does the resistance in the sensor and causes an engine cutout, once left to cool down the resitance drops a bit and may allow the engine to start again. This would have to be confirmed with diagnostic equipment or by checking the sensor resistance, either way a job for the garage.

Then why does it smell like gas and try to start

If the check engine or MIL is not on and it does work, that is, it comes on during lamp test when you rotate ignition key from off to on, and goes out a few seconds later? Suggest it could be fuel flow or pressure.

If MIL light is on, then you need to have the engine codes read.

As to why you smell gas... significant amount of unburnt fuel/vapor somewhere (mikysfin crank) or an outright leak or evap malfunction but there again should be MIL light.

I would start by checking fuel pressure if possible, tech tip.. have someone hit the bottom of the fuel tank with a rubber mallet while someone is cranking the engine, if it starts it needs a fuel pump.

SOURCE: my dodge neon 2000 stalls after about 20mins

You might have a bad coil pack causing the engine to stall after it gets hot, I would start with changing the coil pack, good luck, Gary

Cranks but won't start sometimes. Also has cut out while idleing in traffic and again cranks but won't start. car has new battery.

From what i've seen over the years with the Chryslers i've encountered. Your describing to the "T" what appears to be a bad Crank Sensor. I will bet money that if you replace the crank sensor it will solve your problem. BUT...Also know that a bad fuel pump can do exactly what you describe in your statement. Once the pump get hot it gets to acting stupid, but yet again so can the Crank Sensor. Still, my money is on the Crank Sensor.

My blazer trys to start but wont turn over and its not every time some times it will some times it wont. i had the fuel filter changed in it cause someone told me to try that but there is no differece.

by not turning over i`m guessing that you mean the engine won`t crank over,if you mean won`t start when the engine turns over then that is a different path of diagnosis.if you mean that it starts to turn crank over but stops almost immediately then this could be a weak battery,or bad starter with a bad spot in the starter, that`s why it will start sometimes and sometimes not as the starter hits and misses stopping on the bad spot.if you mean it cranks over fine but will not start then this could be a fuel pump going bad,a dirty throttle body,a bad crank of cam sensor, these usually set a code in the computer and sometimes turns on the check engine light sometimes not.you should have the computer checked for codes to see if there is any,or just a wiring problem for the ignition system

Won't start, starter motor turns over but it acts like it is not getting any gas. I had the fuel filter replaced two months ago.

Is it getting a spark at the plugs? Check the crank position sensor and the connection. Unplug it and was it iff with CRC electroni spray cleaner. The sensor and the plug. The sensor is located above the crank pully and more easily accessed from below.. Godd luck_Ned_
