First check battery charge (and electrolyte level) is good and battery connections are clean and not loose. Check engine and frame ground connections not corroded/loose.

It senses when the engine pings and the computer will adjust the timing accordingly. It is located in the block.
SOURCE: Check engine light intermittently flashing, car jerking.
Could be fuel or electrical related. Since you may not know the history, this may take a while.
Any amount of smoke from exhaust? White, Blue, Black?
Start with most obvious and inexpensive:
1. Fuel filer clogged (replace fuel filter).
2. Could be the ECM (Electronic Control Module). It controls the ignition spark timing.

Yes, the tumbler is worn, possibly from a heavy key chain or abnormally frequent stop/starts. Ther amy also be a bad connection in the switch connections itself, that may not require a whole new ignition switch.
