Not usually if it's running and backfiring. A timing belt on certain cars when it breaks can cause major damage because the valves stop and the pistons continue to move up and down can hit the valves bending the valves and even shattering the piston. You need to align the timing marks on the crankshaft and the camshaft for it to run properly

What will cause it to steadly pop pop pop throu carb like small backfire

There are many reasons that a vehicle will backfire through the carburetor. What determines the cause depends on what condition the backfire happens. Is it a steady backfire at idle or does it start when you are accelerating ? Do you live in a wet climate or dry? Has the engine been wet?
Backfiring is caused when the exhaust valve is open during the firing or compression stroke of a certain cylinder. For example, a broken spring will not close the valve completely. A bad camshaft lobe will cause a back fire, if you have a distributor that got wet the spark could cross over to another area wire and cause the problem causing a missfire. If the wires were put on wrong after putting in plugs it will cause a missfire.

Can a large enough backfire threw the tailpipe throw off your timing

no
but the back fire could be caused by a failed timing belt or chain
a back fire is just exploding fuel in the exhaust or inlet manifold caused when a valve has not properly closed and fuel fire is allowed to escape

4ac engine. What causes backfiring?

This can be caused by improper engine timing. Has the timing belt been worked on? Consider inspecting it to see if the timing marks are lined up properly.

Another possibility is a too-lean mixture, cause by an air leak in the intake, or too-low fuel pressure. Inspect the flexible bellows in the intake tract for splits, and have a mechanic measure fuel pressure. I'd advise against the old method of measuring fuel delivery quantity in a given time, it is too dangerous.

My 91 Mazda MPV will start but it will not stay running and is backfiring. What could be causing this?

Check the timing to make sure its properly lined up, the belt may have slipped and jumped a tooht, or loose tensioner on the timing belt. Confirming the timing will give you a good clue as to where to look next.

Backfiring into the valves

if you just had the timing belt changed then I suspect that the belt was not installed properly and is probably out at least one tooth. Possibly the cam chain tensioner is the culprit.

Think that our automatic choke went out.Ran rough and was backfiring before it got warmde up.

the car is fuel injection so there is no choke for it has no carburetor.Backfiring is usually the cause by worn timing parts such as the belt. If the backfiring occurts only upon when it first starts up the mass air flow sensor is probably the cause instead

I am still having problems with my 2003 Hyundai Elantra making backfiring noises. I just had a fuel injection cleaning that cost nearly $90 performed and the problem is still there. Some of you have said...

Backfiring is caused by timing , bent or burnt valves. If the timing belt was replaced but not put on correctly, you will have this problem. The marks MUST be aligned correctly.
