Fuel pump needs replaced
changed fuel pump, ran a bottle of seafoam injector cleaner as well., solved the problem, however, there was a wire chewed thru under the plastic cover that went to a sensor on the front left top of motor, red.. resoldered, also had found that the resistor plug in front of battery on grill was unplugged also

. Don't just replace the fuel pump without testing . Voltage drop test fuel pump electrical circuit . Do you know how to test automotive electrical circuit's using a DVOM - digital volt ohmmeter ?

The fuel gauge being erratic could be caused by a faulty sending unit in the gas tank , or the gauge . Knowing how it works would aid in diagnostics. GM also had instrument cluster problems . Hooking up a scan tool to see if the fuel level info. that is sent to the instrument cluster is what the sending unit is showing . The vehicle starting when cold ,then not starting again after shut off after driving 10 min's sounds more like a sensor , not the fuel pump. But without testing that is just a guess .
Fuel Gauge
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) broadcasts the fuel level data via the class 2 serial data line. The instrument cluster compares the fuel data using a 16 point look-up table in order to determine the needle deflection. A smooth filter is used in order to secure a continuous response. The instrument cluster may determine if a low fuel condition is present. In the event of a low fuel condition, the following conditions may occur:
• The instrument cluster shall activate the LOW FUEL indicator.
• Send a chime message to the Body Control Module (BCM).
The instrument cluster may drive the fuel gauge to E (empty) under the following conditions:
• The fuel level data is lost.
• The PCM is in a state of health fault.
Besides voltage drop testing the fuel pump electrical circuit hooking up a mechanical fuel pressure gauge should also be done, testing pressure an flow before saying it needs a fuel pump.
what sensor should i be looking for if it is one ?
Crankshaft position sensor .Testing like in the video using a lab scope .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzZNlPos...

i gaurantee that it is the fuel pump ressistor up on the passenger side front behind head lamp assembly you will find the connector with two wires going to it. no need to remove old one install new one and connect wires to new one leave old in. dealer only part but not expensive. dont belive dealer when they try to talk you out of it. This is a kit to relocate a ressistor that has been installed in a poor location. I promise this will fix it. My wifes car did the same thing, took 20 minutes to fix and that is only because i am an electrician and am finicky about where to locate wires etc. the kit comes with installation instructions however they are a little vague. trust me. easy fix. my dealer tried to get me to leave car for repair and said it sounds like the theft detterent system. they were wrong and i was right. dont trust em

Chech to see if you're gettin a signal from the crankshaft position sensor located behind the crank pulley. If no signal, you have either a bad sensor or a bad crank pulley. There is a reluctor ring on the pulley that separates and goes bad. If you have a good square wave signal from the the crank sensor it's probably going to be the computer. I've replaced a lot of them. They do really wierd things when they start to go. Check all of your grounds first. Also, while the car is running, shake and pull on the wiring harnesses for the computer. I've seen on a few cars where a wire or 2 will go bad and cause and occational short.
This will be challenging to find ... If headlights dim or flicker too ... check battery terminals first. But I think it will be a large harness with quite a few wires on it ... Check ... for loose bulkhead connectors at the firewall ... and between the Engine and the body/firewall .... at the ECU .... you may also check for loose harness connectors at the fuse box. check for loose or corroded fuses ... especially if a cover is missing.
If I remember correctly this truck has 3 fuse panels in it. Check the manual

If you turn your key forward (And make sure the fuel pump kicks on) Cross the starter terminals with a screwdriver. If the car starts like this you have a bad ignition. You can replace the cylinder or the whole column.

If you don't stop an turn it off does it keep running ? How far can you drive ? If you could or can drive say 20 miles it's not the fuel pump .
Have you ever changed the fuel filter ? Spark plugs & wires ,air filter etc.....
How long do you have to wait till it starts again ? Besides a crankshaft position sensor a ignition module could cause your problem .
