Sounds like canister or purge valve failure, caused by topping off ( rampant in peoples republic of Nj, ******* to pump your own gas) lucky me my sonata has 2 cannsters a canister valve and a purge valve. Too much nanny state worrying about gasoline vapors, BTW about $500 in parts and it throws computer codes
Not sure about the Elantra but if I think that might be the car that I had a problem with before that has a double tube in the tank filler spout it designed to let the gas tank burp and they will come loose and fall and bind and not let the gas flow properly
Malfunction
The evaporative control (EVAP) system captures any raw fuel evaporating from the fuel storage system (e.g. the fuel tank, filler neck, and fuel cap). Under precise operating conditions-dictated by engine temperature, speed, and load-the EVAP system stores and purges these captured fuel vapors back into the combustion process. The carbon canister, which stores the raw fuel vapors, utilizes a vent valve that allows fresh air to enter the EVAP system. This displaces the fuel vapor as it's purged into the combustion process.
Code P0449 indicates that the evaporative control (EVAP) system vent valve solenoid is malfunctioning. This can be caused by either too little or too much electrical resistance or a mechanical problem with the vent valve itself.
