Unlikely to cause issues on a 98, 4l60 trans not 4l60E, braking system is 4 wheel sensors and an ECU with prom.

There is a possibility that it could cause numerous issues, including shifting and braking problems(w/ABS). The vehicle is doing adaptive strategy each time you reconnect and drive. Vehicles have to go thru 3 drive cycles, and this doesn't mean 3 trips to the store and back, to readjust after memory is lost from battery interruption.

How do I complete three drive cycles successfully?

  • Victor DiMaio Jan 21, 2019

Unfortunately a drive cycle is determined by many factors. Here is a link for a 2001 Ford explaining a drive cycle. But what is best for you is to repair the ignition issue. The fix, by what you are describing is not that expensive, just time consuming.https://repairpal.com/what-is-the-drive-...

SOURCE: 1998 Chevy S10 pickup backup lights don't work

Yes it screws in on right side of tramission and you will need a 7/8 inch deep socket to remove it. You may be able to clean the old one once it is removed. There is a little ball thatgets dirty and may you can get by with cleaning it. Good Luck. Ed

SOURCE: chevy s10 brake lights

If the problem is that the brake lights will not turn off, the problem is most likely the CHMSL relay. An easy check is to take the cover off the fuse block mounted on the driver's side fender well and swap the fog lamp relay with the CHMSL relay. If that fixes it, just get a new relay for the fog lamps and you're good to go. Note, my 2002 s10 does not have fog lamps, but it still had the relay populated in the fuse block.

SOURCE: 1998 chevy s10- brake pedal goes to the floor-

Did you put fresh fluid in the master cylinder? I really think you still have air in the lines. To bleed manually, start with the bleeder the greatest distance from the master cylinder, car running, helper pushing down about half way on brake pedal and releasing 3 times, on 3rd time, holding pedal down to half way depressed point while you open the bleeder valve. Repeat until you are sure all air has been flushed out. Check master cyl reservoir level often, because if it gets low and you **** air into the system, you have to start all over again. Go to wheel next greatest distance from master cyl, repeat above, working your way to wheel closest to master cyl last.

I have a 98 monte carlo 3.1 auto trans. when i turn the key to start, the security light flashes and it does nothing

Have it checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's . I suspect the problem is with the tdm module or the ignition switch ???? Assuming will only get you into trouble . If the PCM - engine computer does not see the right coded meassage from the TDM it won't turn on the fuel injectors or it will cut them off in two seconds . .
Buick Security Systems 1998 Chevy is the same .
Ignition Key With Wrong Resistor Pellet Code is Used To Start Engine
The theft deterrent module performs one of the two following actions when you attempt to start the vehicle with a wrong ignition key:
• There are 15 PASS-Key® II resistance ranges. The PASS-Key® II resistance may be one of the 14 valid but incorrect PASS-Key® II resistance ranges. The theft deterrent module will perform the following actions when you attempt to start the vehicle (if the condition is present during an engine start attempt or for 1 second any time after the engine has started):
• Turns on the SECURITY indicator
• Sends a password to the PCM through the fuel enable signal circuit
• The password disables fuel delivery to the engine.
• Disables the theft deterrent relay, which disables the starter circuit
• Disables sampling of the PASS-Key® II resistance for 3 minutes
• The 3 minute time period is called the shut-down period.
• Disconnecting the battery will not clear the timer sequence. The timer sequence will resume when battery power is restored.
• Inserting the proper key during the vehicle shut-down period will not start the engine. The engine will not start until the shut-down period has elapsed.
• After the shut-down period, the engine will start if the correct ignition key resistor pellet is used.
• The PASS-Key® II resistance may be correct and allow the engine to start. Later during the same ignition cycle, the PASS-Key® II resistance may be one of the 14 valid but incorrect resistance ranges. The theft deterrent module will perform the following actions:
• Enters the fail-enable mode
• Turns ON the SECURITY indicator
• Sends a password to the PCM through the fuel enable signal circuit when more attempts to start the engine occur
• The password allows the fuel enable circuit to deliver fuel to the engine.
• Enables the theft deterrent relay, which also enables the starter circuit.

Ignition Key With Correct Resistor Pellet Code is Used To Start Engine
The theft deterrent module performs the following actions when the correct ignition key is used in order to start the vehicle:
• Enables the theft deterrent relay. The theft deterrent relay enables the starter unit.
• Sends a password to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) through the fuel enable signal circuit. As a result, the PCM allows fuel delivery to the engine.

I have a 1988 S10 with the 2.5L. It starts busting up when you give it a lot of gas. What could be the prob.? it seams to idle fine.

"Busting up" is hard to diagnose. A person needs to feel how it runs which would give a better idea if its fuel or ignition related.
I would suggest a tune up if it has not been done in some time (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc.). Possible ignition module. Those can be tested at an Auto Zone and they test them for free.

Also change the fuel filter. A pressure test would be best as you can see what pressure the pump is giving at idle and under throttle to aide in determining if its a Fuel Pressure Regulator.

And check any vacuum hoses. Bend them a bit where they attach to something. They can look good but be split and bending them will show.

Oil change tech says my idle relearn needs fixing on my 2001 Yukon XL...can my husband do this?

{: ) Anytime the powertrain control module (PCM) or the battery is disconnected, the PCM loses power, or the PCM is reprogrammed, the PCMs learned idle position is lost. The engine idle is unstable when the learned idle position is lost. For a 2001 Yukon XL, you can try these steps: Automatic Transmission
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Restore the PCM battery feed. ( IF it was disconnected)
  3. Turn OFF the A/C controls.
  4. Set the parking brake and block the drive wheels.
  5. Start the engine.
  6. Ensure that the engine coolant temperature is more than 80°C (176°F).
  7. Shift the transmission into Drive.
  8. Allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes.
  9. Shift the transmission into Park.
  10. Allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes.
  11. Turn OFF the engine for 30 seconds.
Manual Transmission
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Restore the PCM battery feed. (IF it was disconnected)
  3. Turn OFF the A/C controls.
  4. Set the parking brake and block the drive wheels.
  5. Place the transmission in Neutral.
  6. Start the engine.
  7. Ensure that the engine coolant temperature is more than 80°C (176°F).
  8. Allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes.
  9. Turn OFF the engine for 30 seconds.
After the procedure, you can do testing and observations. If unsuccessful, you may repeat the steps.
Also, the best time to relearn idle is after a throttle body clean (from carbon deposits)

I have 98 Chevy S10 pick-ups? MY problem is there

Yes it could well possibly be the ignition switch or starter solenoid or intermittent ignition switch starter contact.Again check connections on battery especially the ground connection at the block. Also there could be air in the fuel line any of these could be hindering start up!

My Chevy S10 will shut down, starts back up minutes later

Check if your wires are on TIGHTLY on the battery, if one loses a touch, your car will shut off. If you go over a tiny bump, or turn to one side or another, they could disconnect, causing your car to lose a + or a - cable connection. Which would very well make your car shut off. Also, check for any corrosion on the battery terminals. Good luck.
