Question about GMC Cars & Trucks

2 Answers

If the one of the O2 sensors on a 97 GMC Sierra 2500 is bad - will I smell raw gas and while driving the truck sputters a little bit. How can tell which one of the 4 O2 sensors is bad and how do I test it ? I took the truck to the auto parts store and there was a code 13 came up. I googled it and it said that a O2 sensor was malfunctioning. Which one is the culprit ? Or do I have to change all 4 to be safe ?

A good scanner should tell which one is bad but you might wind up replacing all of them

Well, the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor is located on the air intake duct between the filter and the throttle body (Assuming you have the 6L motor). The wires are easily visible at the plug that connects the sensor to the wiring harness. That's the easiest place to access them.

Bank 1 is the frt side exhaust manifold (did they say bank 1 sensor 1?),you can start by replacing that sensor,i would check the intake for leaks ,the gm 6cly. are known for bad intake gaskets, you will see oil coming out form the frt or rear of the intake, also check your atifreeze overflow bottle for bronwish sludge, which means that the oil is mixing with the antifreeze.A leaking intake could cause that lean condition.

Check for vacuum leaks n (broken or leaking hoses; gaskets), bad EGR valve (plugged or stuck open) or raw gas running into the intake manifold (leaking fuel injector(s) or bad carb).

O2 sensor location on 97 gmc sierra 2500

There shouldbe three. The up streams will either be in the exhaust manifolds on either side of the engine or in the exhaust pipe right after the exhaust manifolds. There will be one ( downstream) after the catalytic converter. You could also have just two. Both would be in the exhaust pipe just one before the cat and one after the cat. I'm pretty sure you have one on each side and one after the cat. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYS ON. WAS TOLD IT WAS THE 02 SENSOR/VALVE. WHERE DO I FIND THIS? GMC SIERRA 1500

You should have 5, O2 sensors on your Sirera. What are the DTC codes, each codes will indicate which O2 sensor needs to be addressed, or is this an answer with someone guess what the check engine light is saying.
Thye check engine light could be from a bad O2 sensor to just a bad or loose gas cap to a transmission issues.
Thank you for using fixya and note that Auto Zone and most larger auto parts store will scan DTC codes free of charge.

Which o2 sensor did you replace? P0157 is low voltage - o2 sensor, Bank 2, sensor 2. So it would be the post cat o2 sensor on the passenger side. If you replaced the drivers side the code would still be there.

The o2 sensors in that truck are heated. You probably have a bad o2 sensor if you have a code for a 02 heater
