Not sure where a cheap Rubber elbow is located on a passat. But do take off the coil covers. They are located under the engine cover. They are the 4 square caps. They come off with a allen wrench i believe 5mm. Then pull them off. Due this 1 at a time. Once off look down the hole with a flashlight.
And look at the rubber surrounding the coil. Their should be no moisture.
If their is moisture try blowing it out with compressed air.

first check cylinder 1 , spark plug, ht leads, coil,
then clean the trottle body with carb cleaner
if that does not work replace the throttle body, comes complete, and do a basic setting on it with diagnostic machine

Hello! There is a device called the MAP sensor. It is located after the air filter, and before the intake. A 3" to 4" plastic tube with a wire connector coming out of it's side; Connected with a hose in and hose out that connects to the intake. This is the culprit 90% of the time. Auto part stores sell it for around $80-$90. Check both hose for cuts or holes which allow dirt to enter after the air filter. The MAP regulates fuel flow. Radio Shack has a product called "Deox It. The catalog # is 64-4338 and it is used to clean electrical devices. Cost is around $15. Try cleaning it first and see if your trouble clears.
