Well, there are some hundreds reasons why the engine can stop. Common ones are:
Dirty fuel filters, problems with electronic distribution, spark plugs to be changed, broken fuel pump, battery contact not in place, blown head gasket, rarely also a problem with anti-theft alarm motor lock can cause same thing.
Generally, if the car motor stopped immediately, with no additional symptoms is likely a problem with distribution ( no spark).
If you have experience in servicing your car you should start from checking if there is spark, and if petrol is being pumped regularly.
Best thing to do is always having it checked by a mechanic.

Diesel engine use 21 part air and 1 part fuel.
Make sure the air filter is clean and the air tube between air filter and engine block is in good condition.
Air mass flow sensor is reside in the middle. Air/fuel ratio will be off if there is any leaks along the air passage.
======
If the problem is only occurs at 1/3 tank of below then the fuel pump may be getting weak.
======
Change the fuel filter if it's 3 years old or >36,000 miles.
Star-tron is a good additive for diesel fuel.

I had that - it seems it is a common problem with these cars. I changed a couple of things and then scrapped it.
Since then I have heard that it is often the crank position sensor. Supposedly it is cheap to change so that would be a good start.
Mine would drive normally and then it would just die and not restart for anything from 2 mins to a couple of hours - then it would run normally for a while.
